Advice Nikon D80/D90 and Import

Hi,

I currently have a Nikon F60 film SLR with 24-80 and 70-300 lenses.

I am just about ready to go digital and of course I want to re-use my existing lenses. With this in mind I'm considering the D80 or D90 camera body (and will get a 18-105 or something like that later).

I really want the D90, but it's quite a bit more expensive. However, the D90 can be had for a much more reasonable price online.

Is it advisable to import ?
Which are the most trusted sites to buy from ?
How much duties can I expect to pay ?

Also there is the US based 47th Street Photo or 46th street .. I forget) - They are the people amazon.com use for their photo goodies. (plus noticed this week-end that they about $90 cheaper than BH Photo for a lens I wanted)

I know lenses don't carry a import duty, not sure about camera bodies (possibly electronics?) - if you want to be really sure, just to go to the SARS site and spend a few minutes there (looking for import forms etc you will find a nice big pdf listing all types of goods and their % import duties)
 
bwana and koffiejunkie would know, but I haven't seen bwana today. I think he may be travelling abroad.

Well, I go to the US often enough to just go to B&H - bwana knows about their shipping (which I believe is excellent). He's over here at the moment, as far as I know, so you may have to be patient for input from him.

Get the D90 though - it's quite a cut above the D80 (I'm sure ldmelsa will agree).

Yeah - I'm freezing my butt off in the UK for a few days.

The only problem with shipping from B&H has nothing to do with B&H . . . customs. :eek: They took weeks (if not a month) clearing my last lens. :o

And yeah - Glass is duty free but bodies carry a duty - not sure what it is though. VAT of course is payable regardless.

I wish - I'd be back home by now if I had :D

According to some of the locals it was actually warmer here last week.

Recession is hitting the area pretty hard too - I walked down the high street looking for a camera shop and all the electronics stores (Curries, Dixons, et al) were gone. (Had to laugh - half of the high street was also without power). Guess I'll be putting off getting my P6000 for a few more months.

Yeah, it's customs that gives the problems. B&H is a great store.

Are you and kj gonna hook up? :p

Not this time but I was thinking about a MYBB UK get together later on in the year.

I wonder if rpm would supply some tshirts . . . :D
 
Thanks guys. Now to wait for my bonus in April...

I'll probably go for the D90.
I have a habit of settling for less and then regretting it later. I don't want that to happen again.
