Advice on a 65 Inch TV

We are replacing our 55" TV with a 65" or 75" TV. I'm leaning towards a 65" so that we could get more bang for our bucks in terms of image quality.

There are a boatload of options and from what I can find online it looks like Hisense, Samsung and TCL lead the pack in that area of 65" QLED screens in the R12K - R18K price range, we have an Apple TV and decent soundbar so the most important features are the screen and image quality for sports, movies etc. Gaming isn't a priority on this screen.

If anyone could provide some solid advice based on their experience or if any TV Guru's out there could point me in the right direction, that would be great!

If you're considering backlit, read about the dirty-screen effect and which TVs have it the worst.
Hisense, by far IMO, have the worst dirty screen effect, which explains their price point. It is especially visible when you watch bright fast-moving scenes, such as sport.

Samsung/Sony/LG suffer the least from this and Skyworth has nearly none, if you're OK with a previous-generation backlit LCD panel.

nvm it was the C855 that was that high, don't see the C9 or C8K in SA.

My 65" Hisense is still going fine for 5 years now, the old 58" it replaced is also going strong and the 50" that it replaced was also going strong, plus they have a 5 year warranty so if the backlights are weak and fail, the replacement fee isn't 30% of a new TV it's Hisense repairs it over the 5 years.

Same here. 65" Hisense is still going strong after 3 years.

Kinda sensitive there, eh?

Which Hisense model do you have which doesn't suffer from bad DSE? I literally had 3 of them at one point (Makro/Takealot/Tafelberg), all of which had it bad.

All the same model, though.

Not the entry level tv like yours. But just saying quite funny you're going on and on about hisense but paste a Samsung with major DSE.

Hi.
My Samsung Q60d 65 inch is less than 3m old.
I mainly used it for YouTube for the first two months and was very happy about the bright and crisp display. Lately I've been watching a lot more series where there are much darker scenes than ordinary YouTube. and I've noticed very bad grey/black uniformity and Dirty Screen Effect (DSE) and now it is driving me mad. You only see it in darker scenes (especially title screen and credits) but even in normal darker scenes where there isn't a lot of movement I can see these light patches. It reminds me of a faint glare of a torch on the screen...

Yeah, thanks Naks and Lupus, I've ordered the C6K, for me the price difference of R8-R10K isnt worth it at the moment, especially coming from the previous screen we had.

Samsung has DSE too.

Looking at the Rtings long term tests, you can see how the panels get worse over time. The higher end QLEDs age almost as badly as OLEDs.

I have a Hisense TV that's about 15 years old. Never had a moment of trouble with it.

Nuclear war will decimate the planet and that bloody TV will still be there.

Have they returned it? That would be my advice.
 
For anyone interested, Vodacom direct has the 75 inch Samsung DU7000 for R10200 including free delivery. ...not a bad deal

Grandma praising a child's drawing versus an art gallery critique.

Takealot reviewers compare to their old TV or have no reference point. Rtings claim to use calibrated equipment and comparative methodology across hundreds of TVs.

To my untrained eye, they all almost look the same in stores. Yes, I can see the difference between an LED vs OLED, but those measured differences, viewing angles, fast motion, HDR, processing quality? Rarely. Only just now getting used to having a 120Hz screen

They’re good value. I have the old TU7000 65 inch from a few years back and it’s still good with my PS5. I had a 58” with some dse though but this one has been great.

People should just not expect 120Hz with excellent HDR, it’s a R10k 75” not a R60k 77” OLED
