I have decided that console gaming just isn't cutting it and I miss my PC.

I am looking at an entire system incl monitor, keyboard a mouse even.

The PC will be primarily for gaming and I want something nice, not ridiculous but nice.

I thought of:

- Core2Quad CPU with acceptable mobo +-R3k
- Well ventilated case with at least a 500W PSU +-R1k
- Nvidia 460 gtx 768 (i think) the awesome one for around R2k
- 1 TB sata 2 internal HD +- R700
- Mouse and keyboard +-R600
- Monitor +- R2k
- Memory DDR 3 +- R1200

Have I missed anything, are the prices I am finding decent. I am pretty undecided on GPU and CPU.

I don't really want to go over 10k

Advice please, I haven't done this for a while...

Thanks in advance

Switch out that CPU (old tech) for either a i5 750 of Phenom 955/965. The rest is good to go.

Yeah, Archer has it right. i750 or Phenom II, or Athlon II if you want to save money.

GTX 460 is a very good card, but consider splashing out for the 1GB version.

I thought as much on the processor... I more a fan of AMD than intel. If I went with the Phenom II 965, what mobo would be nice? Very tempted to go the 1Gb GPU route, is there that much of a difference. I am wanting something that will last at least a while

The 1GB version should ensure that you won't run into memory issues at the 1920 res your monitor will almost surely be. 768MB is technically enough at the moment, but I would go for the extra headroom.

I agree swap that CPU out..
Graphics wise..
Wanna go Sli? then 460.. If not and you want to splash out on the 1GB version. Just check the pricing as you might end up in 5850 ground... And I'd most definitley still go 5850 at that price point...

I'm sure its been mentioned before, but SLI and crossfire just generally arent worth the headaches. the 1GB 460 also has more memory bandwidth, so its definitely worth it.

I think a motherboard with the 890X chipset would be good, might be expensive though.

so far "dead vtx3d 5850" and "vtx3d 5850 not working" don't turn up any frightening results.. Which is a good thing.. But i've neva bought from them so no experience with it.

You'll also find that VTX3D has a longer warranty in SA than other cards. I would have no issues buying one.

I have a couple of times and let me tell you, the service is top notch.

Yeah, saw a 2nd hand 5850 for R2700 (iirc) in classifieds.

It's too expensive for second hand.

Not biased but bang for buck go ECS 790GX AM3 + AMD 955BE

True, but I have learned my lesson with these cheap models.

Sapphire/Asus/HIS 5850 perhaps?

Wow... I can here my bank account crying already.
I really don't want to go over R10 000 but... Eish its quite exciting when you start looking.

I am assuming this :"VTX3D Radeon HD5850 1GB PCI-E Graphics Card" is quite the shiz?

Yeah, they (5850) are not bad cards. I just build a pc for a friend, box only for R8k. I3 530 with cooler, as I am going to OC it, Asus mobo, 4gbg ram, GTX 460 768, CM 334 case, Odin 585w psu, 1TB hdd and dvd writer...

Stock is very low on the HD5850s all-round I'm afraid :/ . The only ones readily available are very pricey ASUS cards. Next batch of Club 3D cards are expected around the middle of August.

On the plus side, GTX 460s are available in abundance. Fermi, without the flames :D . My recommendation, for you, lloydkayak, would be the GTX 460 768. In terms of price/performance, the GTX460 does trump the HD5850. Both are excellent cards, I just think that it's about time for ATi to drop their prices a bit ;) .
