I disagree. Unles you SLI the 460 it offers exactly the same value for money as a 5850. The 5850 is roughly 25% more expensive than the 768mb version and gives you roughly 25% more fps.

I agree.Would be nice if I can get another Vapor-X for around R2.8k...:)
 
GTX460 is a great choice for SLi, they like to hunt in pairs (like the HD5770). I'd say i5 with 4GB memory and a HD5850 is your best option if you want performance out-of-the-box. The clever way to do it is to get the said GTX460 now and then add in another GTX460 when you finances allow.

They are closely-matched in terms of price/performance. From our offerings, the most cost-effective HD5850 is 29% more expensive than our most cost-effective GTX 460 768. Given a set of benchies here, at all resolutions below 2560x1600, the GTX 460 is the better value-proposition. Since most gamers using a mid-range card would probably be gaming at resolutions below that, I'd still hold by my recommendation. Although, they are really close :) .
 
I've got the VTX 5850, bought from Wootware a couple of months ago. (Thanks Ratwiz :) ) Great service, Great card, great performance. Coming from my old 8800GT, this is an excellent card. It's running cool and quiet. Running BC2 @ 1080p all on high and my fps never drops below 50. The reason for VTX being cheaper is the lack of bundle. No free games, cables, basic box. Nothing fancy. Just the referance ATI 5850 in the box. My only issue is that I don't have enough money to buy 2.

You cant really compare graphics cards price and performance on the same scale. Normally you'd expect the price of a better graphics card to increase by 50% and performance by maybe 30%. So the HD5850 is actually a better buy because it gives a more significant increase vs price increase.

I found a good price on a Leadtek 460 gtx... Is this manufacturer any good? Cheapest 5850 I can find is R3200 or so... BIG price difference from R2000
 
Never had problems with Leadtek. Rather worry about the place where you are getting it from, their service. :)

Worst chipset i have ever owned or had ,, the board was completly unstable radicly changeing desktop icons and other eradic behavior,,several programs would die during operation with error codes explorer would just all the sudden lock up..i changed the board out with another board that has the nforce 590 chipset and everything worked great the comp was faster and more stable.. nvidia should do a recall on the 630a chipset..

Just personally but a mobo under R1k is looking for ***. Try get atleast the 770 chipset..

What about an Asus M4A785TD-V EVO AMD 785G Motherboard w/A8 + G + LK + FWa + SATA2 RAID + DVI + HDMI...

Then lasty, I am pretty happy to updgrade to the ATI 5850... Someone here said that Club 3D is bad... 2 year warranty... I can get one for just on R3k... It seems alright
 
I had a Club3D 5870, had problems with it in my pc, sent back to IkonicIT to test and it tested fine there. They gave me another one and it did the same. Ended up in getting credit for it and buying a sapphire card.

Don't know if other people had problems with theirs as well.

Edit: What CPU do you want to get again? and how much is this board?

- There is a clear R1k differnece between the 460GTX 768 and the Club3D 5850... this makes me think that the GTX might win as whichever I choose I will need to upgrade it again in 2 years anyway.

- The board is just on R1000 seems to be a good one

- I am undecided between the Phenom II 965 3.2 GHz with 4 cores or the Phenom II X-6 2.8 Ghz with 6 cores... only about R200 between them... I am also thinking of spending R500 less and getting the Athlon II X4 AM3 Quad-Core 640 3.0GHz which is still great if I keep the GPU good

Get this one + 965/640 and the GTX 460 1GB! :)

Edit: Or if you want something fast, get the cpu and mobo that I have with the GTX 460 1GB. ;)

If you plan to mainly use the system for gaming, i would go i5 750 or PII x4 955 with a slight OC on both :D (the PII 965 just has a slightly higher clock) so save money and just OC a 955.

but i vote i5 :D
