Google Adwords can be very competitive, but is definitely the right place to start with selling products online. Start with Search Network and try a bit of Display Network as well. Display network can be profitable, but search is usually more reliable.

Email marketing is also excellent, but you'll need to build your own lists. Make sure you're collecting email addresses: "Sign up and hear about our specials first!"

Other common online advertising disciplines include Search Engine Optimisation, Social Media Marketing, Content Marketing, Affiliate marketing, and Remarketing. Focus on adwords and email for now as they're the easiest to get started with and I wouldn't recommend trying to skill up in everything at once.

Adwords search let's you target people interested in the products directly. But many people won't buy from a place they've never heard of before. Display helps build some awareness so when they wanna buy they'll click on your search ad as they recognise you from display earlier.

People absolutely do buy from shops they've never heard of before. Trust factors are a big deal though and you need to have that nailed.

There's certainly a place for using display for brand building, though I'd say that using display for remarketing would far sooner be the priority for a small ecommerce. I suppose it all depends on ones objectives though.

Hi Sakkies,

It would help if we new more about your website and the type of products you sell.

Is the website up or are you still working on getting it up and running?
