Hey Guys,

Just a quick one.... use the scenario that money was not an issue.
What advice would you give on a ISP/Solution that would be
1. Fastest Internet connection available in SA
2. Lowest latency (fast response times)

What this connection will primarily be used for is collaborating data to the amount of 5TB+ per day.

Are there uncapped fiber solutions in SA? Or would you suggest a T1 route?

I don't think a T1 pipe would handle the volumes of data we are looking for, unless we look at a couple 100k/pm im sure?

The downtime is not business critical as such (not revenue dependent), but a reliable source/solutioned would be preferred.

Any suggestions welcomed !

Dedicated fibre and uncontended internet breakout. Nothing else will give you what you need.

You will need a minimum of a 500Mbps dedicated fibre link and internet breakout. You can PM me for more info about this if need be, but the cost of such a dedicated internet link will be more than R100k/m.

It's also actually pretty quick and easy to deploy this for you. The only real lead time is fibre installation.

Check PM for details

I was also thinking fiber.. but checking who can provide the best service/quality/speeds required. Anyone got some POC's they can share? some stats possibly?

Your connection would be a dedicated fibre link and dedicated internet breakout. At that point "the best" provider really comes down to service levels rather than performance as the last mile and the internet breakout would be uncontended and dedicated. Unless of course you want to run a contended internet breakout, in which case your internet breakout would be contended with other users on the network, meaning there is no way you could be sure that you could push 5TB+ per day, and no way for the provider to necessarily guarantee that either, unless you paid a premium and your specific contention was lowered to prevent that. But running a network on IFs and buts with the likelihood that you'll be filling the pipe permanently is not really a risk one would easily take, so you'd really want a dedicated link and internet breakout instead.

Your primary issue is last mile connectivity. The only solution is fibre, as you need 500Mbps. You could always bond 15 x 40Mbps lines but then you're contending on the last mile and you WILL congest the exchange running full tilt. So ADSL is out. Wireless you can try to get those speeds but it's a very dicey game to try to secure a stable 500Mbps wireless link and there's no benefit over fibre, as well as it working out more costly (unless you're in a remote area).

My advice: fibre is your only option. Dedicated is your best bet for your requirements. It's not cheap, but it's solid, future-proof, and does mean that VOIP and IPTV become possible over the network too, meaning you can further monetise or capitalise on the network. Hope this helps. More info by PM if needed.

Would this be local or international traffic?

I already have a semi answer. the data would be held locally on site, and would only require to collect 'snippets' of the data daily for analysis...... (and to answer your question, all local)... so no probs... thanks to those who responded!

If it's local it's a different story. This can be done far cheaper and easier.
