Advice on in-car GPS system

I wish to purchase a GPS unit for a friend who will use it in his vehicle. It does not have to be the top of the range, as he is not a techo savvy geek.

It must be easy to use/not too complicated, cheap/free to maintain, have a good screen and reasonably priced.

TomTom, Route 66, Garmin???

had all those other useless PDA stuff (map&travel,mobi map ect ect) - but the nuvi kicks it sixlove!

even the nuvi 200 is good.

I have the 300, and I think the 200 is the same without extras (MP3 etc) which I dnt use seeing as the sound is not good to listen to music

Try the Telefunken Navi. Game has it for app R3000. I have one and it works a charm. Easy to use, big enough screen and quite robust. The only problem that I have with it is that the pre-loaded SA map is two years old so road and infrastructure development after that is not correct. Oh, it also have a more than decent amount of POIs. (Points of interest - shopping centers, parks, banks, restaurants etc)

I have a Garmin Nuvi 310. It's a fantastic unit and the voice navigation is brilliant. There are free updates - software and points of interest ie. fixed camera speed traps, mobile camera speed traps, road block favorites, high accident areas and more. Also, it has bluetooth technology allowing it to be a hands free kit for your phone in the car. I have found no problem with the maps. I think that new updated maps will cost about R180 every two years or so.

Nuvi is a probably the most effective unit. If on a budget, check out Mio units.

Decided on the Nuvi 200. Makro has it on special for R2999. Will pick one up tomorrow.

The nüvi 200 (not the 200W) can do tracking with a hidden feature in version 3.40 firmware. See http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=98909&whichpage=2. It does work on my unit purchased this week.

I rate go for Tomtom One or Tomtom One XL ... cheaper than Garmin ... better (aside form Garmins bluetooth handsfree feature), and the bigger than Garmin worldwide ... and although I've personally heard Garmin deny it ... they use nearly identical mapping systems

I would recommend the Mio - NGR had some or other deal with Standard Bank Valuechoices, where they were really cheap. I see they still have the best price I can find for them...and they are on special!

My girlfriend bought one - it's brilliant. Maps are good and roads and points of interest are well covered.

I have the Nuvi 200 and it is great. I would also suggest buying the Mapsource software (R49.99) while you are there and converting the GPS to full Mapsource mode. Then you will be able to manage wayponis etc. from your PC and also be able to get weekly downloads of speedtrap locations. Check out www.garmap.co.za for more info.
