Hi Guys,

Hope that this is the correct thread for this..

I'm off to the NZ RWC11 :D and would like to hit the ground running when I arrive(so to speak). Does anyone know what sort of (sleep) routine I should take(or any method) that will minimize the jetlag experienced.

We leave SA @ 16h00 and arrive in Sydney @ 14h05 (the next day) then catch a connecting flight (18h35) to Auckland and arrive @ 23h25. I have never been on a plane trip out of the country so I am not sure what to expect. Should I party hard and sleep my way through or??

Jet lag isn't so much lack of sleep. It's a whole balance issue which makes you feel tired. No real cure though. I can give you advice on what not to do if you plan on hitting the ground running. DO NOT TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF IN THE PLANE.

You won't be able to get them back on again when you land. I learned this the hard way, my feet where so swollen I had to walk through the whole airport in my white socks :(

Wow really? thought you were just taking the piss! but shouldnt I slowly change my watch towards nz time, so that when I arrive at 23h25 I will be sleepy rather than having slept the whole way and arriving full of beans, while the rest of nz is asleep. I suppose thats the million dollar question.

def wont take off my shoes :D

I try to stay awake when I arrive until a suitable bed time locally.

leaving my shoes on hurts like hell...i prefer having slip slops or keeping the shoes off

haha, was kinda looking for a preventative measure as my time there is limited LOL! The way I see it is, you sit cooped up in a plane for close on 2 days(this may just be the timezone thing and not actually 48 hours) and have nothing to do but sleep, so when you arrive in NZ in the middle of the night you're rearing to go, but everything's closed, and so you sit up in your hotel until the avi, then you're completely kished out come noon??

but like I say, I've never been out of good ol ZA so I don't really know..

Yup when i went to greece my sister's feet looked they were going to explode haha.

Go to your doctor and ask him for a benzo sleeping tablet for the plane. Take it and get as much sleep as possible. I did that and i never had any jet lag, granted i started drinking the minute i got off the plane :D.

If you can sleep on the plane you should be fine. Went to NZ via Singapore in December and suffered terribly with tiredness. Your grace here is that you're arriving in Auckland at 11pm.. I'd recommend hitting the sack as soon as you get to your hotel so you'll be less tired the next day. You'll only feel normal after your second/third nights sleep.

Drink lots and walk around on the plane.

I may need to take the safe route and go with one shoe on and one off, that way I know I'll be able to walk on one foot atleast. will do it in the name of science lol. conflicting views :.(

@bwana: I arrive there @ midnight, now considering I've been sleeping on the plane for the past 2 days does that mean I should try and stay awake that night through to the next? cuz the thing is that next night = the opening ceremony and opening match, and dont want to be kished for it.

the conundrum!

it sounds as if its tough to sleep on the plane?

I wish it was that easy ;)

have never had a problem taking my shoes off so guess it depends on your own physiology. Take melatonin tabs, they helps regulate your sleep cycle.

I fly to the East (Singapore and Japan) at least once a year. What works for me is to get up really early on the day of the flight. I get up at 2 am and watch action thrillers till the morning. My flight leaves at 14h30. I have dinner, watch an in-flight movie. By 17h00 SA time (23h00 Singapore time) I am pretty sleepy already. I then take a Zolpidem sleeping pill. This gets me to sleep (by sleep I mean I dose off such that I lose track of time but I do “wake up” now and then to reconfigure my position, it’s economy class after all). Sometimes I sleep through breakfast which they start serving at 03h30 Singapore time (21h30 SA time). So when we land, I’ve had a good 4 to 6 hours sleep. Then I pop a couple of espresso’s at Starbucks and stay awake until bed time that evening. That night I take another sleeping pill to ensure I sleep the full 8 hours. The next morning I wake up feeling fresh and ready for work.

But NZ is really far East, I strongly recommend sleeping pills. You may probably need them for the first couple of nights. Your flight leaves at 16h00. You may need to go to sleep right away. Earplugs will be a must cause everyone else will still be awake.

No man, take your shoes off or else your feet will stink like hell....
I keep my shoes off during the flight.

I managed to get some sleep on my flight to NZ and that seemed to lesson the jetlag. Would have been better if the idiot next to me didn't keep bumping me and waking me up. Too big to fit in his own seat.

The flight is hell, and very tiring.

My hat's off to you if you sleep that long on a plane! :) Those seats are way too cramped for me to do anything but snooze on and off. :o

Either way just hit the sack when you get in then. A celebratory libation or two wont hurt :)

As for shoes - I always take mine off. I never have trouble getting my cons back on.

They normally give you flight socks for a reason...
If i leave my shoes on during a long flight like that then my feet swell.
Flight socks are made to avoid your feet from swelling, use them.

Left on Christmas eve, and arrived in Sydney around 7am on boxing day. I flew via Dubai (with a 2 hour stop off, which I spent at an Irish Pub drinking Guiness at 5am, it was after all Christmas day) and then on to Singapore for an hour or so stop-off. So when I got to Sydney I hit the ground running, as I had to get to Brisbane, I caught a flight and got into Brisbane an hour earlier and waited for a friend to fetch me, it was about 35 degrees already and when I got to the friends house I had a swim and then we went up the Gold Coast to a place called Noosa which is a two hour car ride. when we had settled in we went off to a restaurant for dinner and we took our own wine along, well I was tickets and fell asleep between ordering and serving of the meal. Later in the evening I was wide awake again and could not sleep, so I watched TV until dawn.

There's really not much difference between the socks they give you these days and normal tube socks in my experience. You can buy special socks that help prevent DVT though.
