Advice on Jetlag please jetsetters??

haha, was kinda looking for a preventative measure as my time there is limited LOL! The way I see it is, you sit cooped up in a plane for close on 2 days(this may just be the timezone thing and not actually 48 hours) and have nothing to do but sleep, so when you arrive in NZ in the middle of the night you're rearing to go, but everything's closed, and so you sit up in your hotel until the avi, then you're completely kished out come noon??

but like I say, I've never been out of good ol ZA so I don't really know..

Haven't read much of the thread, but stopped here on the first page.
First things first, if you manage to get enough unbroken sleep and comfort on the plane to stay awake once you land in NZ you are one lucky guy. You have horrible jetlag going east around the world. What happens is that lose time at such a rate, that it is the next day before you know it. The flight lasts for 14 hours or so. Your body thinks that it is 6am when its time to land, but actually its 2pm and almost half the day is gone. You cannot really sleep in the airport waiting for a connecting flight, so you will stay awake at this point. Your flight to NZ will be the key to your jetlag success. Make sure that you do not sleep at all on this flight. Even if you are dead tired. When you hit the hotel in NZ pass out and sleep until noon if you must.

I find that you cannot really rely on good sleep on the plane. So try to get as much of it outside of the plane. The night before you leave. Go to bed really early and wake up really early so that your more inclined to be tired early on during your flight. The sun will go down around 3 hours into your flight, it will come up at around 9 hours in. So you only have a 6 hour window to get some decent sleep. Once the sun comes back up people open their window visors, the cabin crew will start to think about serving breakfast, and you will not be able to sleep for the rest of the flight, at least nothing more than short broken snoozes. Get all of the sleep that you can during that 6 hour window, keep yourself awake from that point on until you finally hit the hotel in NZ. (Unless you really didn't get any sleep). You should be sufficiently buggered to pass out by then.

Pro-flight tip. Find and buy flight socks. They prevent you from needing to worry about taking your shoes off. Your feet want to swell, even in shoes. They will be very uncomfortable while trying to swell inside your lace ups and get uneven pressure points. Flight socks constrict your feet evenly all over. Find them and buy them. Then you can take your shoes off comfortably.

Unfortunately you are most likely going to hit some serious jet lag. Going east is jetlag zone. Coming back is very pleasant though. Good luck.
