I am a 23 year old male and I need advice on medical aid.

I currently have no medical aid and I am getting older and I feel that it's becoming more and more important and I neglected it for too long.

I am looking for cover mostly for cases like accidents and in case I need a hospital visit or surgery of some kind. I don't really care that much for the day to day stuff like doctor visits because I if I understand correctly it will add a lot to the monthly premium?

What would you recommend in my case?

TIA

Have a look at this website, perhaps it can help a little: http://www.msit.org.za/newsite/index.php
It is the "Medical Scheme Information Tool"

Quote from the website:

"This website provides you with information about medical schemes and medical scheme options that are available in South Africa. With 24 schemes and 138 options (and we are adding more daily), all the resources to help you learn about your or any other medical scheme are now available in one place."

My opinion is that you only need is a hospital plan. Unless you are suffering from a chronic condition, I find that anything more than a this is a big waste of money, and really not worth it.

Pay for your day to day expenses from your pocket, or start putting money aside in a separate savings account for these sorts of expenses.

At the very least you should have Hospital Plan PLUS Gap cover.

Plus, on a monthly basis put some money aside as well specifically for medical issues. Build up your own savings account, at the end of the year, reward yourself a bit if its not used. :)

Get the best hospital plan available and put money away in a savings account for medical costs. Don't buy into the health wallet crap. Why would you pay them to save for you, when you can just do it yourself? That way if your medical costs are lower you can use the money on something else, or just leave it there for the next year.

Give this man a bells +1.

I had medical aid for 5 years with discovery. Paying about R650 p/m x 60 months = R39000
I used it about 2 times for doctors with medicine. = R700(Paid by medical aid)
Used it once for emergency root canal. = R1900(R1000 paid by medical aid and R900 paid by me)

So after 5 years of paying R39000 in total I still had to pay almost half of my root canal. This is a load of bull.

Rather get a hospital plan and put your R650p/m in a savings account.

I'm now 27 and realised that after having medical aid, after market service plans, dent repair plans and all kinds of crap for my car that if I put that money away, I could have paid for all that I have done in cash and would have had Thousands of rands extra in an account.

All these little plans and medical aids are money making schemes.

I am on Bonitas as well, the Boncap plan, check it out. You pay something like R617, get GP visits, medication, chronic medication, hospital cover etc.
