Advice on moving DNS from MWeb to new name server host?

Hi folks - I'd appreciate advice on moving my .CO.ZA domain name from MWeb so that I can self-manage my domain.

MWeb hosts my .CO.ZA domain name, which points to their mail servers (a basic hosting package) and I have an auto-forward set up that routes my email to outlook.com.

MWeb cannot provide a service that allows mail, calendar and contacts to sync with my various devices using EAS or IMAP (they're stuck in the dark ages of POP), and their webmail interface is archaic and dysfunctional.

I want my .CO.ZA domain to point to outlook.com, but MWeb refuses to point the domain to a mail server outside of their data centre or to create additional CNAME or TXT entries for me, so I need to move my name hosting somewhere else.

Do you advise using a free service like www.vps.co.za or freedns.afraid.org? Or do you recommend a paid for service like www.posix.co.za (great experience with them in the past) or dyndns.org (who I use for free dynamic DNS)?

Thanks

I'm not sure what that means Fulcrum29. But MWeb won't just host a .CO.ZA name on it's own, and they won't point my domain to a server outside their infrastructure because my domain is tied to a basic hosting package of a few mail addresses for my family and a web server (which I don't use).

But the main reason I want to move is my laptop, tablet, phone all work superbly together using outlook.com, and I want to take the extra step of the mail auto-forward away now.

Thanks for the reply

Basically custom outlook.com

Since you don't utilise hosting, why don't you move your things to a domain and hosting-only entity. This is in line with personal productivity, you won’t need to worry about PoPI, international or local providers are more than enough in concern with the price, e.g. look at domaincheap.co.za, incl. other like domains.co.za and registerdomain.co.za

I have some technical questions outstanding from the Live admins at MS about what level of self administration one can get via the Windows Live Admin Center. If I can't self admin my domain and there's a screwup then it may take a week before it is fixed by MS.

But thanks for your suggestions. I'd appreciate any further opinions.

In hindsight, VPS turned out to be a very good self-managed DNS host. Through acquisitions and name changes they've become cloud.co.za but still the same good service. A bit slow on support at times but understandable by reasonable people considering the free service.
