advice on small camera/camcorder

I am a real novice when it comes to photography. I am lookgin for a small video/photo camera to take family pics. It needs to be small (palm size).
The videos should play in my dvd player without the need for conversion.
If possible it should record in avi format.
Any suggestions?

I have a Panasonic ZS3 and a Sony HDD camera .... I fond myself using the ZS3 more often for shooting videos of my kids because I always have it around and it is always charged ...

Videos look awesome on a full HD 42" LCD.

Only problem is that you have to play it from the camera ... not from DVD

Why not dump the video onto DVD? We also found we never used the actual video camera because the stills camera took as good a video, and it's easier to take with you, etc.
