The secretarial role has changed drastically over the last 15 years. Personal Assistants / Executive Secretaries are, like Nick pointed out, a proxy. A PA becomes a right hand, and can be supremely integral to the success of the person they are working for. Depending on what field she would like to work in, some technical knowledge (such as law if in a legal field, management of development methodologies if for development house, etc). Some business knowledge would be an added benefit, so anything in business management is good. Project Management is a great start, as those skills can be used in almost any position. She could also sharpen up her skills in sales and proposal writing, as most senior level execs do get heavily involved in those areas too.
The majority of PAs tend to move into other roles in time though as they pick up some really good experience and business understanding. So she needs to look at the bigger picture. She should really be saying where she wants to be in 5 years, and then figure out how to get there. Ambling along without a clear goal is not ideal, no matter her intentions, work ethic or level of ability.
Don't listen to the fools here. Unfortunately, it is rampant on these forums. They get to hide behind a screen, so make stupid comments. It's really more a reflection of their small mindedness and lack of understanding. Don't let it ruffle your feathers.
