I have an option to trade my desktop i7 for an Acer 8920 with full spec. I get to keep my SSD and my 24" LCD though.

Does it sound like a good idea? I don't need a poweful desktop PC as I don't game at all. Being mobile does make sense although the 8920 is a beast of a machine. It does have warranty until 2012 as well which is a bonus.

T9300 processor
4GB ram
2 x 320GB HDD (will replace one with my SSD)
18.4" screen
9650Go GFX

And all the usual stuff laptops have.

If you absolutely need mobility, go for it. Going from an i7 920 to a T9300 might take some getting used to.

That's the thing, I don't need mobility but I also don't need the power I have and mobility would be a bonus.

Apparently the 8920 was just shy of 30K when it was bought at the beginning of the year but I also know that laptops lose value quicker than desktops because they can't really be upgraded.

Ho hum, what to do...

I'd probably buy a less powerful notebook and have the best of both worlds - power at home and mobility with my notebook.

What do you plan on using the notebook for?

I say go for it.... You have your 24" that will be useful for when the laptop is going to be used as a desktop also your ssd should speed the laptop up significantly....
Only problem is........... you will be using "old tech" in about 3 months time, when the i7 mobile range is mainstream, and you won't be able to upgrade.....
GL with the decision....
PS: maybe ask the other half for some advice too...

Lol, I'm a really big guy so lugging around a large notebook wouldn't be too difficult.

Would use it for work and home use, internet/email/admin/graphics work etc. The usual stuff.

It also has a Bluray rom which is quite sweet.

The other half? Oh, you mean the live in maid;)

She doesn't care as long as I stop spending money on my pc and start buying tools so I can make things out of wood again.

I have a dog kennel, king size bed base and a book shelf on order from her already.

OK, in that case I vote go for it.

I would keep the i7. If you really need mobility get a netbook or something, you said you don't need a lot of power so the netbook would be perfect, then when you're at home and you want to. . . . . lets say. . . . . "backup" some dvds to Divx format you'll be able to get the job in no time

Would a cheapish dual core laptop with 4GB RAM and average graphics not suffice? Some of the Gigabytes are very good value.

Desktop ftw.

Nah, I'm a compulsive changer. If I get rid of the desktop I can finally stop upgrading.

I'm going to apply for a 3G data thingymabob tomorrow with a laptop. If that comes through then I'm sorted. Might even get rid of the desktop anyway.
