I am in the market for a new TV, but am currently as confused as you can get between HD ready/Full HD/LCD/LED and PLASMA.

I am installing a new HD PVR and will use the TV for occasional gaming (currently WII, PS3 later :)). I also have the occasional avi files on my laptop that I would like to watch. I am a keen 'sport watcher', rugby through to golf (even bowls if my mother is visiting), and the occasional olympic games.

My question is : Would I go wrong with the Samsung C450 42" plasma although it is not Full HD,

From what I've gathered around these parts, the general consensus is that for sport & Dstv, your best bet is plasma. I'm assuming a FHD plasma > HD ready plasma
I'm not sure about gaming on a plasma though. . .

No - unless you need full HD. :D AFAIK most PS3 games are 720p. Also, generally from 3m viewing distance, FHD is not noticeable over HD.

Btw, PS42C430 (2 x HDMI, non-swivel stand) is R5699 at Game.

Tell him about sport!

THANKS

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the feedback...then Plasma it will be!

I have a 40 Full HD LCD which I use for Xbox, PS3 and TV. Gaming on it is awesome, TV not that great. Quality is average using a SD PVR, and I don't want to move to a HD PVR as you then loose dual view, which is nuts if you ask me.

Thinking of getting that 42 plasma for the room, but I see it is now R5999

It's R5699 at Game now.

Methinks you'll be moving your gaming devices over to plasma once you get it. :p

Lol you think so? Maybe I should put the LCD in the room and plasma in the lounge for gaming.

You sure it's R5699??

Guys there are much more to the different technologies than that. The most important disadvantage about Plasma is the fact that Plasma cells have a limited life. Once the cells start dying, you get ugly red or green spots on the sceen which cannot be repaired! More problems with Plasma includes burn-in and image retention. And finally Phosphors lose luminosity over time, resulting in gradual decline of absolute image brightness.
LCD's on the other hand have overcome these "side effects" and LED's now offer unmatched dynamic contrast ratios of up to 2'000'000:1.

Make an informed decision when investing in a new television. It's not all about the sport appearing better (for now) with all respect to the previous comments.

Personally I would not touch anything with a slower than 100Hz refresh rate especially if you're planning to include a PS3 or BluRay player at some stage.

Is your info from 2005? Have you had this opinion for quite a few years now? Seems you're "stuck" in the past (like a pixel :D).

Plasma's life is similar if not the same as LCD, burn-in has been significantly improved on, etc.

Lol @ dynamic contrast...

All I'm saying is that you should inform consumers about a bit more than how good the sport looks on your Plasma. When you're about to throw R6K or more at something you consider an investment, it's always better to be well informed and ask about resolution, response time, brightness, contrast ration, aspect ratio, viewing angle and colour reproduction to name a few.

By the way Plasma could and will never match LCD when it comes to lifespan. Although burn-in have been improved, it has not been eliminated.

And plasma is superior in all of those except brightness (LCD being better in bright rooms). Also remember that when full HD is needed for PC/console/etc., HD ready plasma is not recommended. But when TV, sport and 720p & below feeds are utilised, plasma is the winner. Please don't come and muddy waters by even remotely suggesting LCD would be better (unless the consumer has double the budget for higher end LCD).

Well if I remember correctly, Wikipedia disagrees and said that plasma does come close to LCD's lifespan.

At least now we're getting somewhere "Super Grandmaster" and we're giving the consumer more options to consider!

The intention was never to "challenge" previous posts, only to provide more information. Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia - A large amount of the information posted on this subject was by myself.... :-)

True it was never intended as a challenge. I assumed the main purpose of these forums were to contribute valuable information? Have fun in my absence.....
