Ok, so here's the list.

D-Link DSL-300T.
Billion 5200S.

I'm going for the D-Link, but I'll investigate the specs when I have time, and before the line gets installed... Which will take a while.

D-Links support is bad, and a friend of mine has had nothing but problems with his clients D-Link routers (That is plural). If you don't want to go for the Billion cause you have never heard of it I would then go for the Netgear.

But if you want the D-Link I can get it for you at a good price. PM if you want more details.

Billion 5102 (4 port router) - best value for money in my opinion.
I haven't had a scrap of trouble from it and it cost about R500.

Hmmm, really?

They are pretty cheap aren't they?

The 7901BRA ?

I have the SMC7904BRA - had it for a while now so I couldn't even guess what they cost. As I recall it was more than reasonable when I got it though.

I bought a PCI ADSL modem (Conexant-based) for R99, fitted into an old tiny P2-450Mhz and installed IPCop.....works great.

I got the mecer USB ADSL MODEM but it cost like R750. Also conexant based. The one thing that I was worried about is that it is a "dial up" modem (under network connections) you click "Dial" not "connect". I knew I had an ADSL line and ADSL modem but for my entire first month I was petrified I was going to get a huge phone bill - I didnt, but the one thing I do notice is that I have 40-50 calls on my bill. I never make that many calls so I can only assume that each "connection" is logged as a call.

I have never bothered to ask Telkom for itemised billing so I can check, but I must.

Just because a friend has had some problems with d-link routers doesn't mean they're all bad. They have quite a good reputation in my books and I'd rather (at the moment) trust them than "Billion".

But we'll see what the next month or so brings.

I must say that for the price Billion seems like good value for money. Have on of the Telkom routers flashed to the Billion firmware. Working like a dream. Have not needed to reset it for over a month now!

It was plural! Meaning more than one!

Out of all the Billion I have sold I have had no complaints!

No need to get upset. I was giving my opinion.

Take my adivice or leave it.

Just giving my view on the situation :)

And I did say "routers"...

Ok, one exam to go then I can worry about buying a router.

Software Project Management for me.

Hmmm, DG834 you say... haha.

Those seem to expensive to justify... Unless you can push me in the right direction? :)

They're just rock-solid is all. I've run 2 of them for over 3 years providing internet access on campus to approx. 400 users. They've never given the slightest trouble.

Then again my friend has always had an old ancient Telkom POTS (those first ADSL routers that came out) which has run solidly for him. I had the same thing before my Netgears and it gave me endless sh*t.

Look you'll probably be fine with whatever, chances are you'll have more crap trying to sort out sync losses on your line or some other kind of dropout and not have any problems with your router :)
