:wtf: is happening with Afrihost today?
I haven't been able to download anything from Bitorrent today. It's been running like a dream previously. 12.6 GB yesterday and only 1.2 today. Anyone else having problems?

Same here

400 gb capped afrihost account 40Mbps line and torrents are dead..

I thought capped account were not shaped..:mad:

Not just you. Checked someone's line they have 40Mbps VDSL and speedtests achieving only 5Mbps down

Afrihost accounts are not "shaped" but they are "optimized", which is exactly the same thing, but it means they can continue to advertise and sell shaped products as unshaped, because, of course, they are not "shaped".

And anyway, doesn't "optimized" sound even better than "unshaped"? It's the "best possible experience".

This is what they have replied to my query.
As torrenting is not a Real-time service, it has very high prioritization activated on it as it has a high demand of network.

We manage all of our uncapped ADSL accounts on an hour to hour basis depending on the performance of our network at that time.
If the capacity of the network is stretched at that time we will dynamically shape and manage the account to relieve congestion on the network.
Uncapped clients will be chosen based on historical bandwidth usage. Uncapped users with the most amount of bandwidth used will be managed first if there is network congestion.

In order to ensure that everybody has the best experience possible, we will manage our network by prioritizing the types of traffic to make sure that our clients' Internet experience is as fast as it can be - no matter the time of the day or the utilization of our network. We will never throttle nor shape any of the Real-time services at any time of the day or night - no matter what your overall usage is. Your speed will be as fast as your Telkom ADSL line allows for Real-time traffic (Actual speed is dependent on line speed, distance from the exchange, quality of the cabling in your area and current capacity of your Telkom exchange).

To make this possible, we will not shape Real-time services (Web browsing (HTTPS); Live Streaming (YouTube); Secure browsing (HTTPS); VOIP; Email; Terminal services (SSH)) during our busiest times. Non-real time services(HTTP Downloads (downloading a file from your browser), Torrents (BitTorrent), News servers (NNTP)) will be shaped on a sliding scale, with our higher bandwidth users getting shaped more than lower bandwidth users, only on these services (NEVER on real time services).
This will ensure that our network is not congested and that all of our clients' experience is not negatively affected.

It is our goal to ensure the best possible experience for both the biggest and the smallest of our clients given the parameters we have and as such we reserve the right to manage the uncapped ADSL accounts as we deem necessary to ensure optimal performance across our network for all of our clients.

I trust this information is useful.

Well it's not, isn't the capped account in question? How will uncapped shaping info be useful?

Same issue and also in PE.
Capped account at 10mbps but download currently only at 2.5 mbps.
Normal speedtest.
Never had any issues like this before.

I'm dead in the water... Can't stream above the 200 category on Netflix... On a 20mb line on a capped account

Wtf

Did some speed test just now.
All back to normal again.
8.5 DL and 0.8 UL
Ping = 27
On a 10Mb line connection.
