Afrihost and steam

Hey guys, I purchased 'Fear' and 'Warhammer II' this weekend. Combined I have to download 29 gigs. I started friday night, and up till this morning I was getting a steady 100Kb/s which is ok on a 4 meg line. My download of Fear (17 gigs) just finished. But during the whole day today, I never get more than 30Kb/s. I tried changing my region as some people indicated one should do if you experience slow downloading. I switched between my afrihost uncapped and capped accounts, and no speed increase. Now my questions:

1. Is there any other ISP that can be used to download from steam at higher download rates?
2. Should I try mweb uncapped this month?

Get a prepaid account from WebAfrica. Can download for free off of Steam since it's considered part of their FreeZone.

Steam is not "Guaranteed" freezone anymore, be careful.

It appears the WA steam server is being a bit buggy

God Forbid any 1 buy a prepaid to use the freezone. Freezone doesn't work so nicely on prepaid. You will find that you will loose the 1GB you paid R69 for will be dashed away on a freezone and Webafrica will refuse to credit you. Happened to me so many times before.

steam is shaped by IS as it is seen as a "downloader", and probably marked in the same group as torrinting. the only way to get around this is to use a party trick or two.

I took advantage of the Axxess R99 uncapped thing (last 4 days of the month) and managed to get 37 gigs of steam games down.
I had 4 or 5 games downloading at the same time, total bandwidth usage of about 400kb/s on my 4Mb line.
With only 1 going it would only hit about 250 to 300 kb/s

Maybe try the Axxess thing R99 until 12pm tonight? Just make sure you contact their support and make sure they cancel the account tomorrow else you pay R999 for June.


My SAOL account was nailing a single download at full speed, 430/435kb/s.

Don't bother, their steam server doesn't work and you will just waste R69.

webafrica's freezone for steam == flagshipped.

Yea the webafrica steam thing is a bit of a hit and miss . I pulled down 20GB from Steam in May [using all the instructions to get it into the Freezone]. Only 8GB actually were picked up as Freezoned , the other 12GB i logged a support ticket and they gave me 6GB back. So all in all, i got 14GB from Steam under the Freezone and 6GB i paid for....so i guess it's not that bad but not reliable.

I guess if you are already with WA, it's not going to hurt to try it, but changing ISPs or picking WA for the Steam server , no guarantees. Might be worth getting a 1GB account and experimenting, you can see within minutes whether something is being Freezoned [from the usage page] , so i suppose you'll get your steam downloads off the freezone if you are persistent and monitor your download often...

That said, it is downloading at max line speed....i was hitting 480 kBytes/sec from Steam all the time.
