I have several Afrihost capped / per gig purchased accounts that have completely and utterly gone from brilliant to useless all in one month. Is this the future of Afrihost? Cause if it is I am closing the 7 accounts I have with them ASAP. It seems now that even with capped accounts you will be throttled into oblivion. Would it be safe to assume that capped account bandwidth is being 'borrowed' from uncapped bandwidth and its relevant restrictions?

It almost seems like this whole uncapped thing has killed the internet for us in za. Will we be able to ever see unrestricted unthrottled data transfer? Just an endless fiasco......

I too have this problem with my afrihost capped account. Normaly torrents will download at decent speeds, since this whole seacom thing happend(and is supposed to be sorted) im getting pitifull speeds. Trying to use up my bandwith that i had to buy incorrectly as an bandwith stats error on their side incorrectly suspended my account and i had to buy more gigs only to find the next morning that all of a sudden i had more bandwith. I doubt that i will be able to use it all up seeing as a well seeded torrent 100 seeds+ are going at 10kb/s on a 4mb line .Changed my account from an 10 gig to an 1 gig account and moved to a 25 gig webafrica account.

try axxess lite unshaped...
i have cancelled AH and now use axxess unshaped as my backup connection...

the whole day i have averaged 450 kb/s on torrents..really is unshaped!

only R19/GB for now, incl top ups.

We still want what was promised to us. Someone gave me their 5gb a/c worth 3.5GB left... torrents also shaped to death. worrying times for my afrihost accounts to.

Well Axxess and AFrihost accounts will most likely perform identical. I don't think the Seacom issues has been ironed out 100% , since even my Axxess Unshaped account is -still- underperforming.

So honestly, i don't think anyone can really make a clear judgement call on performance based ont he happenings in the last 2 weeks. Everyone on IS has been hit in some form, so if you're not taking that into consideration you're not making a very educated decision.

However, Afrihost is no longer the cheapest or most economical. Axxess is cheaper right off the bat. Web Africa is ALSO now cheaper . R29 p/gb has quickly became "expensive" . Even the random R14.50 p/gb special is not "special" anymore. So as someone said in another thread, Afrihost needs to sharpen their pencils a bit.

EDIT: And WA also stated they're launching a R15 p/gb topup system next week....

So my question to Afrihost was:

"I purchased a top up just before the Seacom outage, and as a result of the slow speed / no access, I now have 1.2 Gig that is probably going to to go waste. Is there any possibility of rolling the unused amount over for the next 3 days so that it does not go to "waste" ".

and the reply was (and I quote verbatim)

"Hi [name removed],

Thank you for your reply. :)

No usage refunds will take place nor carried over due to the maintenance. You were able to connect and use your bandwidth, full throughput to content on the IS network.

Thank you for your support! :)

Have a great day & please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Warm regards.

So how about that eh! So here I am, trying to download my MSDN packages from Microsoft - getting a lousy 20 KB/s which means that I won't be able use up my leftover topup before 12 tonight...

Methinks it may be time to move on.

Hello,

You know, no offense, but I will be swapping over to one of the other ISP's to see what service is like at your competitors - why? because I'm miffed that in order to use up at least some my bandwidth that was about to expire at 00h00 (because in spite of what you say below, the speed was atrocious during the week as a result of the Seacom outage), I initiated a large download (650 meg file from MSDN) on Friday night - I expected to get at least 430 meg of it down before 00h00 (after all, I have a capped account that is not supposed to be throttled like the uncapped offerings).

And what do I find - well, between 21h00 and 00h00 my average amount of download is 68 meg per hour - from 00h00 to 04h00 my average amount of download is 118 meg per hour - so the consequence of that is I've now chewed through 480 meg on the first day of my new cap allocation that I should rightly have been able to use up before the new month kicked in.

You guys generally do a fantastic job and I've been impressed with your offering since switching from MWeb, but your lack of flexibility in this case leaves me unimpressed - in really money terms it's pennies - that's not the point - it's the principle that counts.

Good luck with your business - I'll continue to have respect for you for opening up the market.
