Something has gone to pieces again. 190ms ping to Cape Town from PE, 3mb throughput on a 20mb line :(

And it was going so well....

Reconnect your PPPoE connection. My ping was fine, then my connection restarted and suddenly my ping went up to 180ms.

I then reconnected and suddenly its back to normal again...

Seems like I spoke too soon.

I'm really tempted to cancel my account due to this kind of shaping nonsense.

Code:
C:\Users\Chris-Desktop>tracert -d 41.185.60.1

Tracing route to 41.185.60.1 over a maximum of 30 hops

  4 170 ms 176 ms 176 ms 41.181.54.86
  5 188 ms 205 ms ^C

... disconnected PPPoE and let it reconnect:

Chris I think it's time to cancel

Well colour me surprised, not:

Speedtest to London:

TestMy.Net 25MB test from London:

TestMyNet.jpg

Speedtest.net results are clearly not meaningful at all. I wouldn't bother with them.

Aaaaand... titsup.

Throttled to 3rd line speed, packet loss every hop, latency right up there again.

Borked, borked, borked.

Let me guess... local issue... nothing to do with software calibration, account profile or anything Afrihost / MTN... just me, only me and nothing that has been sent, PM'd or posted here has any bearing on this whatsoever. Isolated local issue... just calls for more tracert, tests and diagnostics again.

I switched back to Telkom Again, it was good whilst it lasted but 6 months of rubbish, less than a week of acceptable performance and now back to what it was.
This is beyond a Joke Afrihost, obviously you are not able to fix it / unwilling to fix it / Milking it for all its worth. Pick one.

It looks like I am shaped from 07:00 to 00:00 , but I have a capped account??????????? from 00:01 to 06:59 full speed and low latency

And it was going so well....

Also had issues in PE last night.
In fact it does not even seem that there was any IPC that they added recently.
Tried streaming DSTV and it was like I was watching 10x10 pixels moving around - I was surprised I had sound!
This on a 20meg line too!

I think AfriHost is messed up :(

Oh, and, no its NOT my line......

Morning Guys

It seems like performance was still not as good as we expected and our guys were still rolling out further changes to improve service. We've also reactivated the notice on our website until we are completely satisfied that performance is at the level it should be.

When then changes are pushed out, it seems like latency and packet loss increase pretty dramatically for a short period, around 15-25 minutes, around the change and then the network returns to normal operation.

So far, the reports here match up to the times I can see major changes were made. The team are back at work looking at the network and hopefully we'll see even better performance through the day and especially the evening.

The same thing gets said everyday... for months now.

I also now stronlgy believe some ISPs are now completely by-passing speedtest .net traffic from all their shaping and bandwidth management systems. Thus you get good speedtest results but the rest is crap

We don't bypass speedtest or whitelist it, though in the past we've heard some stories of other ISPs using proxy servers to ensure good speeds.

We only treat speedtest as a realtime service, otherwise we don't treat it any differently.

so then why is the streaming so bad when the speed-test show everything is fine? Is it because certain protocols are shaped or managed more than others? I thought streaming was a real-time service?

How long does it take to "transfer" a AH managed adsl line to an other ISP?

If you submit cancellation today, it will be queued for the end of the month.

If you want the line transferred faster, use the relocation feature and then you can set the date you'd like the line to migrate back.

What is the best way to go about having a cancellation? I would like my data that i get from afrihost to stop at the end of the month.
