Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Is it just me, but I'm getting a lot of DNS time outs recently when loading pages? Checked the router and it is set correctly to the recommended Afrihost DNS servers.

Try changing it to google's DNS?

Primary: 8.8.8.8
Secondary: 8.8.4.4

Morning!

There didn't appear to be any DNS issues last night on our side or on the MTN Network itself. What I would perhaps recommend using 196.7.7.7 as the primary DNS with 8.8.8.8 set as your secondary DNS, this should help improve DNS reliability.

I don't apper to be able to stream from any server this evening, even in SD, and pages are taking an age to open.

Did you see your access speeds and latency impacted as well? How is your streaming performing today?

Netflix performance is pathetic, pulling around 100 Kbps on 4 Mbps line, is anyone else unable to access Netflix at present?

Is your Netflix performance permanently at that level? Or are you seeing the performance affected at specific times?

Is there a seperate thread for PLUS+ issues?
Having been billed twice for it I looked at my account and it appears that everything has been reset, my double data is not showing, the mobile data is not showing and it wont allow me to allocate the options to any of my accounts.
R99 for SimFy is a bit steep, but it is the only part of PLUS+ that is actually working.

:(

Something doesn't seem right with that, can you please send me a PM with your Afrihost Account Number or the username for your account, I'll definitely need to have a look at it.

All speed tests were fine but streams were just not working.
Shortly after that I noticed that several internationally hosted servers started showing as offline too and all of the sites that were taking ages to load were also international. I suspect it was a cable fault or DDS attack overseas and we just got caught in the crossfire.

All seams fine this morning, but I am back in the Office :(, so unable to test streaming.

That is certainly possible, I'll run a few tests my side as well, but the streaming that I have tested from my home connection seems fine at the moment.

If you notice anything off, please let me know.

Hi,

For a few months now, every time I check connection status on my router it is at around the 6Mb mark. I have a 10 Mb line. The internet is fine in that I get whatever the line speed will allow, but obviously this is being restricted by the 6Mb.

is this something I need to talk to Afrihost about or Telkom? (I never moved line management to Afrihost).

If the line is with Telkom, you will need to work through them I'm afraid. Arranging with Telkom to update your ADSL line sync from 6Mbps to 10Mbps shouldn't take much longer than a call to them on 10210. Although all ISPs have lost the ability to update the ADSL line sync profile from the Telkom Client Portal, I am quite sure that Telkom Call Center agents can still do it from their side.

DNS issues are back on this ISP and has been problematic for the past few days - host not resolving on first attempt - and that includes hosts which are local domains and SA IPs.

Its not caused by local exchange congestion

Attempting to link to hosts in AUS is virtually impossible as the connection routes via London and then drop out on hops off 482ms...per hop from London onwards.

I am not seeing any reports of widespread DNS issues in any of our regions, would you mind checking what the current DNS settings are on your modem?

Tracert to 196.7.7.7 from CPT area is about 11ms per hop. So the problem is not there - diagnostics run on router - problem not there either.

So problem is beyond 196.7.7.7 onward from the MTN business network routing

Changing 196.7.8.9 to 8.8.8.8 doesn't make a difference to AUS hosts. Its been like this for a few days since the beginning of the month.

Going to find a ISP off the MTN network...sadly the new changes at Afrihost don't work for me.

:wtf:

Could you perhaps post a traceroute showing what is happening?

Thanks for trying to help

However the issue is clear from what I posted already - your routing to AUS hosts goes via UK. It falls over; has been doing that for days.

I also cant afford not being able to reach my own hosts in CPT data centre staring at "host not resolved screen" while there is nothing wrong with the domain and no problems at the data centre - one if not the most reliable business hosting data centre in RSA.

Strangely enough all was fine until your plus product came about. So there most likely will be no difference on capped Afrihost or Axxess options.

Consider taking london03.uk.bb.gin.ntt.net 129.250.5.4 server out of your routing mix its a huge bottleneck and from there the pings go very bad.

Will give it another day or two and see if the situation changes/improves - if not, I'm voting with my wallet after years of good service...this status quo wont work for me in 2015.

As far as I understand, most routing to Australia from South Africa will go through the UK, from there it will either go through the US or through to Asia.

The local routing through to a Cape Town-based Data center should definitely not dropping out on you, does this permanently happen or only at particular times?
