Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Ye I don't know hey, I have been using webafrica for the last 2 odd months now and switch has been great. I have been able to watch streams with bitrate of around 1500kbs successfully on my 10mb line.

Is it possible that there is some sort of a routing issue on ur network, maybe its just not optimized enough or is there that many people on it?

It's worked well at time for me as well, but I guess it also depends on which streams you're watching and how many people are on that stream. I know there was some issue regarding their infrastructure which didn't have enough capacity to serve content for more popular streams and latecomers didn't get a great experience, though I am sure things are improving on their side with them being targeted by Google (from what I read in the press). We've logged several tickets with them and we've followed all the steps they've provided to route.

My ADSL line used to connect at around 1000 Kbps upstream. Since a few weeks ago, it refuses to connect at anything above 632 Kbps. Upstream SNR margin is 17.2 and upstream attenuation is 25.6; modem claims that it could connect at an upstream rate of 1012.

I've power-cycled the modem a number of times, upstream is always 632 Kbps, so it's starting to look like something on Telkom's side. Afrihost Tweak my Line doesn't work anymore, because Telkom has that new software that's *supposed* to keep things going smoothly automatically.

What can I do to sync at an upstream that's closer to what the modem reports it should be able to handle? Yesterday at around noon I logged ticket FLC-359-47510 but it hasn't received any attention yet. (my line is managed by afrihost) Could any of the Afri-people take a look? I could really use the few extra kilobytes of upstream!

I can definitely take a look and see what I can see. I'll see what info I can get out of your ticket, but won't you please PM me as well so I can give you feedback?

Great, thanks! I've just PM'd you with the rest of the line stats.

I see 2 meg line will go to 4 meg soon. Will the 4 meg lines go up as well?

Nothing has been confirmed, but Telkom have been hinting at making 4Mbps the entry-level speed for some time. I'm guessing the ultimate plan will be to phase out ADSL completely one day in favour of VDSL and FTTH.

When Telkom confirm their plans to us, as wholesalers, I'll let you guys know :)

Just in case this might help anyone else:

AfriMan has looked into the issue, and it seems to be Telkom's new automatic ADSL line profile system which has put me on a 7Mbps down / 632 Kbps upstream profile. The 7 Mbps makes sense (my modem reports being able to handle slightly more than that), but the 632 Kbps does not make sense, because the line could easily handle 1 Mbps. However, there's no 7 Mbps / 1 Mbps profile, so I'm stuck on this for now.

AfriMan is going to try to get Telkom to put me back on the 10 Mbps / 1Mbps profile (my modem is clever enough adjusting speeds to keep the line stable), but chances are that Telkom's system will automatically put me on a lower profile again.

Hang on a sec, u telling me modems are capable of manually setting the synced speed to ur exchange???

I don't usually keep up with new modem tech, but I never knew this was possible. The only way to change sync speed was Telkom side.

So if the problem is with Twitch, why is it when I switch to WebAfrica and watch the same stream it performs perfect?

When my profile was still on 10Mbps, I could see the modem automatically adjusting the sync speeds, keeping the SNR margin just above 6 dB and giving me the max the line can actually take. Obviously whichever profile is active acts as an upper limit.

Ye im not convinced... I highly doubt a modem is capable of this. Maybe link ur modem model number, it would be interesting to read the features and see if this actually does happen.

The modem supports an ADSL2+ feature called seamless rate adaptation (SRA): http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/sra

Without disconnecting, it changes sync speed to maintain good SNR. There might be more going on, but my modem (TP-Link TD-W8970) has this active on the line, and I have seen the reported sync speed going up and down (slightly) depending on line condition, without the connection dropping.

(Just for interest's sake, here's a screenshot of my current line stats: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/207154/cpbotha_afrihost_line_stats.png )

No, the exchange still sets the sync max rate, I don't know that modems can affect the actual line sync at all.

My point was that the modem can adjust sync speed to anywhere below that max sync rate to maintain a good SNR. This is why I would definitely like for telkom to change my profile to 10Mbps / 1Mbps and let the modem do the rest (I should get close to 8Mbps / 1Mbps, and not 7Mbps / 632 Kbps as is currently the case)

This is a very interesting feature, very very cool!

U sir have taught me something new today, thanks.

That's basically using networking tools, kind of like throttling, to protect your network. The features and customisations will depend on the modem itself. I know on my modem I can create multiple networks with different QoS rules and priority.

Anyone Looking for a reason to test streaming NASA are about to launch a SpaceX Rocket to the ISS.
What is of special interest is that they will attempt to land the First Stage Booster on a barge for recovery rather than discard it as has been the case till now. SpaceX say 50% chance the landing will work.

EDIT: Launch Postponed for today due to faulty actuator on Second Stage :(

:(

I just opened the Stream and saw that the launch was delayed... I was really looking forward to the rocket trying to land on the barge.

I had a faulty router once that messed around with my upload sync, so maybe try another router?
