Anyone Looking for a reason to test streaming NASA are about to launch a SpaceX Rocket to the ISS.
What is of special interest is that they will attempt to land the First Stage Booster on a barge for recovery rather than discard it as has been the case till now. SpaceX say 50% chance the landing will work.

EDIT: Launch Postponed for today due to faulty actuator on Second Stage :(

Link? :D

Hey AfriMan,

I'm new to Afrihost this month on a 300gb capped account (4Mb/s line) and was looking for some stability for streaming Netflix etc, that Mweb uncapped couldn't give me.

Unfortunately, I'm experiencing irregular but definite buffering on streaming, and even time outs with normal every day surfing and wonder if you can look into it and see what's happening.

Here's a traceroute to bbc...

Any advice? As little as I now about these things, it looks like there's a problem on step 8 internationally.

That's basically using networking tools, kind of like throttling, to protect your network. The features and customisations will depend on the modem itself. I know on my modem I can create multiple networks with different QoS rules and priority.

QoS and setting priorities is very different to what cpbotha is talking about. QoS and Line sync although similar in nature are very different. I use to set QoS in sonic walls across multiple lines, now that was fun!

I'm with Afrihost capped at 6 Mbps and my Netflix is fine though it never goes to HD. No buffering. I'd think we go through through a similar exchange?

Could be. Funny thing is, speed tests and everything else are running just peachy. It's just the occasional stutter which obviously happens at the most inopportune moments. Last night watching 4od, it buffered every 30 seconds for about 10 minutes then it was fine again. Half an hour ago I tried to check gmail and nothing was working. Then after a few minutes it loaded and I did a trace route with those results.

.com and .co.za seem fine, but the .co.uk was stalling on the 8 or 9th hop. Tried a few random uk adresses and all are the same. Still no change now...

I'm a bit miffed as well because Mweb was running fine the last couple of weeks, but I had handed in my notice so I decided to just see it through :(

Was downloading nzb's at full speed last night, not streaming. Pm me some of the sites you have trouble with, let me see if I get the same. Will be home in a couple of hours.

Can't see any issues that standout here, a timeout doesn't always mean there's an issue :)
Is all your streaming poor or only certain sites/ services?

I've watched a few programmes on 4OD last night and same again about the 2nd Jan using my Now TV box. Both suffered with severe buffering for a spell. I've not streamed anything else so far but I'll see how Netflix is doing over the next few days.

Otherwise, it's really been erratic spells of time out and 'you're not connected to the internet' when trying to load gmail or Facebook or whatever.

So nothing specific @biometrics - but I'll let you know if there's something that gives me problems and give you a shout then.

Best to get another capped account from another provider that uses a different backbone and test with that when you're having issues.

If the issues remain then you know to look at Telkom.

Keep testing and running traceroute, there could be intermittant spikes up in latency somewhere.

Just now I could not start a voice party on my PS4, it kept complaining about DNS issues, so I switched over to WebAfrica and BOOM it worked!

I have been having intermittent issues that could be DNS for the past few days too.
So far it has not been a show stopper but could well be an indication of a problem that is starting to develop.
Several people are currently reporting DNS issues but not enough yet for MTN/Afrihost to take it seriously.

I personally haven't seen an influx of DNS issues.
If you switch to Googles DNS do you guys still see the same issues?

I am currently set on Get From ISP but have these taht I can switch too, not sure where they are from:
Primary DNS 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS 208.67.220.220

I will switch if I get the errors again.
