Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

I had the same symptoms a few months ago, went though the rabbit hole of telkom repeatedly but never got a resolution.
Magically one day it was good again.
AH said it was congestion on my exchange telkom said it wasn't them (the usual round and round we go).
I sure hope its not the same gremlin !

Test with another ISP and see what the results are. My IS connection is perfect with no packet loss.

For you guys in CPT...
My line is back to full speed. No issues this weekend. Pretty stable.
Not sure if the IPC upgrade had been done, or this is just a temporary jump up.
Will report back if anything changes.

Was 100% last weekend as well, but come Monday morning it went back to ****e.

Agree this weekend has been perfect, but let's see what happens tomorrow.

Cape Town is suffering.

This is a 40Mbit line:

Should be getting ~35Mbit/sec.

EDIT: Nevermind, not getting much more than this on my WA account either...

I was on the 75GB capped package with a bundled line and then got 75GB free i.e. 150GB in total. I thought this was the new deal and therefore downgraded to 50GB thinking I'll get 100GB (50 + 50).

Now I get told that bundles are excluded from this deal and I'm now stuck with 50GB. Thanks a lot for wasting my time Afrihost. Just play the fine print card, I'm sure that will really please your customers.

You don't get double data with bundles, only with separate data packages.

Any word anywhere about what kind of special the Capped Bundled users are getting?

It feels like months since AfriMan announced it, but it has barely been a week!!
I would like to guess, but I don't think it will do me any good :p

Decided to do a little comparison.

Switched between my IS-based account and my Afrihost Capped account on my one interface. I think it's pretty self explanatory that there is a problem at the moment.

Anybody know if that capacity upgrade is still happening?

The upgrade is definitely happening - it really just depends on Telkom. We've been promised it will happen by the 10th so we're really hoping they'll meet that deadline :(

By the looks of it, it seems clients who have high speed lines (4mb and over) are having these issues with afrihost capped.
Are clients with 2mb and under experiencing these problems?
Getting a telkom line installed 2mb is enough for me. But will be using the access mainly for p2p.
Have a friend who is with mweb uncapped 2mb and downloads p2p between 140 -180kb/s.
Will i get these speeds with afrihost capped account?..

It depends on whether you're going for a shaped or unshaped account - but since you're in the capped thread I'm gonna guess you wanna go with unshaped.

The easiest way is to grab a Free GB account and give our network a try :)

I know nothing about the capacity upgrade - but I would like to know why there's packet loss. I see that as well (to a lesser extent) on my exchange here in Johannesburg. Is it due to exchange capacity shortfall? Or is it the MTN network itself?

When there is increased latency, there is a much high chance that packets will timeout (depending on the packet TTL) and therefore show as packet loss :(

@Afriman
Are you aware of any problems starting yesterday in the southern region ?
My account is taking about 10 minutes to authenticate after the dsl line sync with lots of :
ppp0 Timeout waiting for PADO packets on my router.
And I'm seeing a lot of packet loss pinging to google.com

I'm on a 10mbps capped account and was getting full line speed.

Yes, definitely aware of this issue.

I reported a similar spike on Friday, and looks like it cropped up again over the weekend and is happening this morning.

We've got MTN working on this ASAP :(

Thanks for the update! I also sent you a PM regarding my bundle order, can you check it out when you have a moment.

I'm also seeing massive packet loss (more than normal) since Friday afternoon-ish, it's only apparent during the day though and it's happening on two different lines. I'm just holding thumbs that the capacity upgrade is going to solve this.

It seems like the spike in latency has happened once or twice over the weekend, and we're seeing it again at the moment. We're trying to pin this down - it doesn't seem to be an IPC issue unless there is something we're not seeing on our reports right now :(

Hmmmm... I haven't received any emails about the free top up. What package guys? I'm on a 50GB.

You should have received a mail regarding a Mystery Bonus Top Up if you are in a Capped Bundle. If you have a regular capped account - then you're already getting Double Data this month :)

You may have gotten double data before you bundled up your line. Sounds like it's a bit of a miscommunication for this month. Drop me a PM and let's see if I can help out with this :(

Bundled clients received Mystery Bonuses for the last two months - I'm hoping though that we have something more permanent in the pipeline. Time will tell :)
