Youtube for me is being served by this ip 173.194.128.88

This is not normal is it? It means it being served by a US server and its buffering non stop even on low quality.

It can depend on the content, some of it isn't always cached locally.
Is streaming poor across the board or only at certain times?

Well I have to admit that its not always slow but I did experience some buffering this afternoon on 14Mbps line so yeah that was a bit weird because I have not been getting buffering ever since the line speed got upgraded.

Also just trying to figure out if youtube should be coming off local servers or not. I think even European based servers would have been better than US based servers.

But its not that but actually.

Is there any reliable bandwidth speed benchmarking site other than speedtest? I ask, because, although my AH speedtest results are good at the moment, the actual experience is not, and if I test download a file hosted on a remote dedicated server (with a large pipe at a datacentre) using AH the speed is max 50-60KBs but using another ISP is near max line speed, so while I don't mean to cast any aspersions, it seems that speedtest.net is becoming increasgly detached from reality.

I also now stronlgy believe some ISPs are now completely by-passing speedtest .net traffic from all their shaping and bandwidth management systems. Thus you get good speedtest results but the rest is crap

And to add for comparison to show that it's not my line:

Afrihost - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3916085692
Webafrica - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3916101778
Openweb - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3916108312
FNB - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3916113713

I'm pretty damn surprised how well the FNB 1 performs >.<

(Apologies for posting other ISP stuff in this thread. I know it's meant for Afrihost support. Purely here for comparison to show it's an Afrihost network problem)

Do not be sorry, it's services paid for but not delivered in months now.

Absolutely. Or it's so prioritized that it's just a test of your line.

If you want a better way to test for shaping/general internet speeds drop me a pm.

OK so streaming still sucks on Afrihost, although downloads are running at line speed. This time I have traces and stream graphs on both Afrihost (more buffering than actual playing) and Webafrica (zero buffering).

AFRIHOST:

Twitch.jpg

WEBAFRICA:

Twitch2.jpg

Edit: Notice all the RED buffering in the Afrihost stream. This is the same channel done within 5 minutes of each other. No reboot of the router was done. And on 10Mbps line.

it should be: latency from PTA to Jhb 12-30, 1.5-1.7 download and .35-.47 upload, my line is 2Mbps (I don't watch 6 youtube vids at once so this speed is fine for me).

Don't expect them to fix it. In the 3 years I've been with them streaming has always been bad. It seems to be some international cap they've placed where my line won't ever do above 200 kB/s

Like everybody has said; streaming sucks.

Side by side comparison of YouTube and Twitch.

The 'funny" thing is that both were working earlier today. I actually saw a 4500kbps rate on YouTube. Twitch had 20+ seconds in the buffer.

Speed test is okay. Missing about a megabit

Looking at the CINX graph we can clearly see we're in off peak hours now...

/inb4 the word "contention" starts getting thrown around again. Luckily for me I'm technically on a new package. Guess who's going to be requesting a refund this month...

Anyone else having DNS issues? I've had to switch to Google's public DNS to be able to browse again.
