Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Titanic's hit icebergs on a regular basis, its what the captain's do at that point that makes the difference.

AH "captains" are currently playing ping pong with a few icebergs atm, so we will see how this all plays out when the dust finally settles.

*sigh*...and here I was thinking of signing up for an Afrihost capped account at the end of the month...

After going through most of these ADSL ISP Discussion threads I honestly don't know where to buy a reliable capped service anymore.

Apparently for some people the capped accounts work fine. For me it does not. Smoke signals would be more reliable.

However, do yourself a favour and use their free account to test? I think you get 1GB free per month. Worst case you wasted your time with them like I have :D

We absolutely do care and I'm pretty sure that our next priority once the network is performing well will be to assess the impact this has had on our relationship with our clients. This is really important to us and we'll do whatever it takes to win back our clients trust.(

Well sending out surveys asking us how much we are willing to pay for services that we were getting for free, especially when you can not even supply the services we are actually paying for, is running counter to that statement.

The Afrihost Plus+ add-on will ensure that you get to lock your Double Data and continue to receive it even if the Double Data ends - which until we release Plus+ is released officially I cannot really comment on. I know it feels like we are now making you pay for something which you didn't previously pay for, but the Directors have chosen this route for a specific reason which will become clear later.

And as AfriMan pointed out earlier this morning, our Team is pushing hard to get the network sorted out, Plus+ is not affecting these efforts at all.

What's the point of having Double Data if your speeds are so slow that you can't even chew through your base allocation?
I have plenty that I would like to download, but trying to download anything at these speeds is ludicrous.

My point was not that we may have to pay, it was that the timing is bad from a PR perspective.

I personally think PR should be more interested in customer retention, at this point, and not as Afriman stated "to assess the impact this has had on our relationship with our clients" only "once the network is performing well".

If you have any clients left by the time you fix this, that would be the time to ask about new products, but not in the current climate. All it achieves is to dilute the impact of the product announcement and further annoy us loyal customers who are not so patiently waiting for this to be fixed.

The speed issue will be resolved, then I am sure the Double Data will come in handy! :)

The timing could perhaps have been better... On that I can agree with. I honestly think the intention was good, but the timing could maybe have been changed slightly.

Hi Afripeople, would just like to commend the prompt assistance of Simphiwe N in getting my line re-sync'd to what it's supposed to be. :D

I will definitely make sure he receives your commendation!

Seems to be all our lines are now effected, Anyone else?

Ok I apologize so long, this is going to be a super long post, mostly pictures to tell a 1000 words, on just how bad my free Afrihost 1GB capped account is. Don't believe me on how bad? Have a look at these Smokeping graphs for your perusal.

How it works, I have multiple ISP accounts dialed up on my mikrotik router at the same time. I then ping the 1st hop on each with Smokeping to test the quality of the account, and the ISP's IPC links. So this will be relevant to capped accounts, on the Cape Town region.

Account 1: Afrihost 1GB free capped
Account 2: Telkom guest account (this is to benchmark the ADSL line without IPC)
Account 3: Web Africa (IS) 120GB home capped account

Example traceroute on account 1: Afrihost capped
Code:
root@fs1:~# traceroute 105.236.9.65
traceroute to 105.236.9.65 (105.236.9.65), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
 1 router (10.0.0.1) 0.781 ms 0.621 ms 0.501 ms
 2 105-236-9-65-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za (105.236.9.65) 8.933 ms 6.456 ms 6.117 ms
 3 ipc-recieve-tb-2a.mtnbusiness.net (41.181.54.86) 8.449 ms 8.727 ms 8.618 ms
 4 tb-dca-2.za--qux-c.za.mtnbusiness.net (41.181.198.188) 8.905 ms 11.498 ms 11.327 ms
 5 qux--tb-dca-2.za-b.za.mtnbusiness.net (41.181.184.31) 8.147 ms 8.842 ms 10.054 ms
 6 41.181.54.213 (41.181.54.213) 9.167 ms 41.181.223.105 (41.181.223.105) 8.836 ms 41.181.223.225 (41.181.223.225) 9.743 ms
 7 105-236-9-65-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za (105.236.9.65) 14.695 ms * 305.971 ms

Example traceroute on account 3: Web Africa capped
Code:
root@fs1:~# traceroute 196.210.201.1
traceroute to 196.210.201.1 (196.210.201.1), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
 1 router (10.0.0.1) 0.749 ms 0.510 ms 0.503 ms
 2 196-210-201-1.dynamic.isadsl.co.za (196.210.201.1) 11.626 ms 6.510 ms 7.345 ms
 3 cdsl1-ctn-vl2173.ip.isnet.net (196.38.72.113) 8.942 ms 9.315 ms 10.222 ms
 4 196.35.115.128 (196.35.115.128) 8.925 ms 9.014 ms 8.091 ms
 5 196.35.115.131 (196.35.115.131) 8.897 ms 9.325 ms 8.833 ms
 6 cdsl1-ctn-vl2375-ipc.ip.isnet.net (196.38.72.202) 8.901 ms 9.227 ms 9.342 ms
 7 196-210-201-1.dynamic.isadsl.co.za (196.210.201.1) 9.370 ms * 397.229 ms

Thus the packets go via the ADSL line, over the DSLAM to the Telkom BRAS/BNG to the ISP's IPC links, and then back again to the Telkom BRAS/BNG. A very good test to purely test the performance up and down the ISP's IPC links, but not furhter upstream, and it excludes random other issues on the internet.

So the graphs:
Afrihost capped:
afrihost.jpg

Telkom guest:
telkom.jpg

Web Africa/IS capped:
is-wa.jpg

So Afrihost is awesome with their packet loss on the IPC links in Cape Town.

Except it seems quite clear that double data won't be continued since we are going to have pay extra for it.
+1 for me the double your data was what made the capped account worth it.

The constant drops in streaming and online gaming performance closed the coffin lid for me and with double data on its way out would make put the last nail in that coffin.

I have converted my account to 1GB for next month and will test its performance in a few months. But for now I think I am going to shop around. Pity as I considered myself a loyal customer for quite some time. My coworkers and friends have been jumping ship for a while and I told them I would ride the rapids and hopefully find some calm waters in the other side.

If things are better I will be back. Cheers all.

holy cr@p is your line still stuck on 2mb from last Friday??

Last friday? My dear last friday is only when I started to complain it's been borked since November 4th when they said the order was completed and started billing for 40mb/s.

I am confident the afribots will compensate my billing and credit accordingly next month.

Edit : my line is now 20mb all good, but it's still stuck on ADSL instead of VDSL.
