Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Hi!

Which web browser are you using for your Netflix viewing at the moment? We've had a few Clients experience problems using Chrome, switching to FireFox or Opera seemed to get the stream running smoothly immediately.

Which Proxy DNS service are you using?

I actually am using chrome. I'm also using unotelly. I'll try another browser.

Thanks!

I think you are confusing Afrihost with Mweb.

Afrihost has by far the most transparent AUP and absolutely pure capped accounts.

Actually I wasn't pointing fingers at any specific ISP as they all, including AH, throttle (Shape - if you must) - certain types of downloads in some form or the other. Most people don't really pay much attention to 'Terms and Conditions' unilaterally imposed by the ISP's and then start bitching when they find out, to their horror that uncapped is not really what they expected. At least, in America, they have now put an end to ISP's and carriers doing this - which is how we expect it to be.
As far as Afrihost giving us "pure capped accounts" this doesn't always apply. Last night, for instance, and it seems every Sunday night, for us 'okes' here in Cape Town. There is a consistent pattern bearing this out. I have noticed for the past few weeks that we have the most awesome service on Fridays with absolutely no buffering on streaming but Sunday nights I usually just give up in frustration. BTW I am on an 'up to' 10Mbps ADSL line whereas you are on your awesome 40Mbps VDSL line that you are constantly rubbing our noses in. (That last bit should be coloured - 'green with envy')!

But it chews his cap so fast that he is only using it on weekend's, that is why CT is fine on Fridays but we can't stream on sundays :)

We definitely offer "pure" capped accounts, in that they are not shaped or throttled in any way, on any protocol and are not firewalled in any way. There is no shaping of any specific service, whether it's torrents, NNTP or adult entertainment. We do shape our Uncapped product, which we're really done our best to be transparent and open about how they are shaped. I'm not sure any other ISP is as open as telling you exactly what services you are shaped on and the degree to which you could be shaped (in terms of the speeds to expect). We don't want any client to feel hoodwinked or that we're stringing them along. Afrihost is about transparency and honesty, and above creating life long relationships with our clients based on our mutual values.

In terms of how contracts work, if we sat down with each every client and worked out a unique agreement, that would still be a set of terms that applied to how the service was governed. However, it would impossible to do this. So we have a standard set of terms that define the agreement between ourselves and the client, but every client is free to look at the terms of the agreement and say they don't want to enter into such an agreement. In fact, if you do so within 60 days of signing up, we give you Double Your Money back! I really don't think this is a plot to undermine your rights as a consumer :)

The poor service you're describing, especially being time based, could be due to a lot of factors. The reality is that if it was network congestion on our side, it would affect every single user in the South region (as we've seen in the past) from Cape Town to PE to East London, and these threads would be going ape! Seeing that only one or two clients may share this experience is a strong indicator that this is probably a more localised problem or unique to a specific set of circumstances. Once we identify those and replicate the problem, there is probably a solution or at least a logical explanation.

I'm happy to run some tests with you and see if we can find out what's behind your poor experience.

Ok so technicalities out of the way, why is then that (and this is not just the minority saying this) Afrihost is known for it's poor Streaming capabilities (local youtube cache servers excluded), and funky routes to Google services. Not all ISP's perform the same even if their capped packages are unshaped/unthrottled/unmanaged etc. The many threads on packet loss and streaming issues are testament to this. As much as you don't like to hear this, the reality is that IS backbone ISP's do perform better than MTN. Afrihost had this and built its name and reputation on this stability and decided otherwise. The only thing still keeping Afrihost in the game is their pricing model.

The routing to Google-based services are pretty standard, when you access Gmail or Youtube, it will resolve to the appropriate local-based caches, DNS responses - such as running a traceroute to Google.com as opposed to Google.co.za - will resolve to the correct international-based servers. A few ISPs handle this in a slightly different way and route all Google DNS queries locally for example.

I think for the most part Netflix runs smoothly, when a client reports an exception to this, we work with them to figure out why this happens and do our best to resolve this.

We are constantly working with MTN to improve the network and get it running as well as it can.

There is always room for improvement.

Please let us know how that goes for you :)

Hi there,

I tried using Mozilla. While it was a little bit better, it still seems sluggish, which is strange as everything else on the account is blazing and netflix is usually the service that performs better than anything else.

@afriman @Afrigenie when is something going to be done about the poor network stability? It's impossible to play multiplayer on the Xbox One with Afrihost. There seems to be constant packet loss (especially during Peer 2 Peer connections), causing constant disconnects from games. It doesn't happen at all on Webafrica. I raised this issue back in early December, and nothing has been done about it. "[email protected]" keeps blaming NAT issues or something wrong with my setup, which is utter BS, because when I use Webafrica or any non-MTN based ISP I don't have a single issue. This is happening for other Cape Town based people who I play with using AH, so it's not just a problem specific to my setup. I'm having to spend nearly R100 a month extra with Webafrica just for gaming, which is ridiculous.

AfriGenie, I sent you a PM last night about the packet loss issue and there has been no follow up. I have 30% loss on TS at the moment and I've been playing CS:GO with loss for the past week. My mates on Afrihost are all having the exact same issue. And from the complaints here it is NOT the specific server or my specific account, it is a GENERAL issue. I am so utterly done with this nonsense.

I also have around 30% packet loss, strange thing is there doesn't seem to be really packet loss. Had about half a yeaer ago around 15% and it was horrible, this seems fine.

I sent messages to Afriguy and Afrigenie. roll on two weeks later and no reply, this is why i moved to Web Africa for gaming, and will soon shift everything over there and just reduce my current AH package and use as a backup. This packet loss issue has been going for ages, I've sent trace routes etc. with no reply. I understand Afriguy was off sick, which is why i then sent it on to Afrigenie who said he would get back to me. Still haven't heard a peep. Once again its comes down to Proactive vs Reactive

Pretty odd. I think when I've tested Netflix I've used Chrome and Safari - I'll admit it's been a while since I last tested.

Is there any way to test if you're on the US or UK server/store?

We worked directly with Microsoft's local rep for Xbox on this and as far as I know it's something on their end. Whether it's how they treat the traffic from our network, or something else, for some reason the NAT settings are not consistent. We tested extensively and sometimes they were open, which was great, and others moderate or strict and we would not have made any changes. The last I checked performance was mostly good without us having made any changes on our end, so we believed that this may have been changed on their side.

Let me get an update from the team on whether any new info has come to light, or if any recent changes have been made, but to my knowledge there hasn't been.

Will you drop me a PM so I can give you feedback?

I'm definitely not seeing general packet loss on the network right now, so we'll need to first establish if there is general packet loss on your connection.

If not, then we need to test (using MTR, etc) where exactly packet loss occurs. If it's within the hosting network, then we can report it to them. Are the TS and CS:GO servers hosted on the same network?

I think it was me who was off sick, but I didn't get a PM from you - but that shouldn't matter anyway.

If you shared any troubleshooting, I'll be happy to look into those and give you feedback. If there is packet loss directly on our network then that's something we need to take seriously. If it's outside of our network we can make sure that our peering/routing is not causing any possible problems :(
