Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

For the last few months, I've been allocated 100GB at the start of the month, instead of the 200GB double data. Then later (about a day or two) the extra 100GB of double data registers. This month it hasn't registered yet, so I'm a little concerned. I'm on Afrihost Plus+. My invoice says 200GB. Is there a reason why this happens AfriMan? :) Thanks in advance :)

We worked directly with Microsoft's local rep for Xbox on this and as far as I know it's something on their end. Whether it's how they treat the traffic from our network, or something else, for some reason the NAT settings are not consistent. We tested extensively and sometimes they were open, which was great, and others moderate or strict and we would not have made any changes. The last I checked performance was mostly good without us having made any changes on our end, so we believed that this may have been changed on their side.

Let me get an update from the team on whether any new info has come to light, or if any recent changes have been made, but to my knowledge there hasn't been.

Will you drop me a PM so I can give you feedback?

But why would NAT strictness cause disconnects? It would hamper initial matchmaking, but once a connection is created, it should then work fine. Also, if the problem lies with Microsoft and their network, why does it work fine with Webafrica and IS ISPs? You're continually trying to shift the blame for what's clearly an Afrihost issue instead of trying to solve it.

I think it was me who was off sick, but I didn't get a PM from you - but that shouldn't matter anyway.

If you shared any troubleshooting, I'll be happy to look into those and give you feedback. If there is packet loss directly on our network then that's something we need to take seriously. If it's outside of our network we can make sure that our peering/routing is not causing any possible problems :(

It was Afriguy that I sent it to, and i sent it on the 20th of Feb, and then sent it to Afrigenie on the 26th, who confirmed receiving it, and said he would pass it on to a network tech to look at.

The problem with Packet loss is that it is on MTN, i get the same packet loss when switching to the Axxess account. When i move over to Webafrica, there is no packet loss at all.

That's weird. You either get double data or you don't. The only reason you wouldn't is if you're on a custom bundle and then you don't qualify. It's possible that there is some kind of exception list that runs separately (that is a shot in the dark on my part, to be honest) but I'd have to check for you. Chances are it was added manually if you logged a ticket or something like (I dunno if you did log a ticket in previous cases)

Can you PM me and I'll take a look?

As I said, we've done some pretty extensive testing on this to try and find out what we could be doing differently on our side, and I honestly don't believe anything in how we configure our network influences this. We tested various settings and protocol changes but this did not really have a predictable effect. I'm speaking here specifically about NAT settings.

In all our tests, once we were able to enter a match with an open NAT setting, the games worked like a bomb, so I don't think we came across the disconnects you're mentioning here. We still have guys testing on Xbox One, Plystation 4 and PC, and at the moment I believe gaming is being correctly classified and is performing well.

I'm happy to check with the guys who have been testing, but definitely not aware of games disconnecting due to any network problems.

So you're saying the disconnects I get with Afrihost on Xbox LIVE are due to a problem on Microsoft's network? Even though no other ISP has the same issue. And Afrihost will not look into it, I must contact Microsoft?

What I am saying is, if we can't replicate your issue, then we need to figure out what is happening on your network that causes you to have this experience. If it's not happening to every single user, in a predictable way, then the circumstances must be another common factor, other than just being on the MTN network.

Test during peak times. The packet loss only starts acting up mid-late afternoon and runs through to midnight.

I'm definitely not seeing general packet loss on the network right now, so we'll need to first establish if there is general packet loss on your connection.

If not, then we need to test (using MTR, etc) where exactly packet loss occurs. If it's within the hosting network, then we can report it to them. Are the TS and CS:GO servers hosted on the same network?

CS:GO MM servers are hosted with MWEB and TS is gameservers.com. I experience packet loss on all TS servers I join, in some cases (on local servers) I get up to 40% loss with ~20% connection quality - switch to WebAfrica and bliss? I don't think there is any more explaining to do. This is during peak times. This morning there is hardly any loss.

Also bear in mind this issue has only got really bad these past few weeks. Before then there was almost always a hint of packet loss but not nearly as bad as it is now.

:(

The traceroutes that you sent me don't show any issues with routing that could be causing the packet loss, I thought initially it may be a peering issue, but that appears to be in order.

Have you been able to use the Web Africa account for an extended period at all for testing?

I have had to play on my Vox and WebAfrica accounts because I am basically unable to on Afrihost. So yes, I have used them for an extended period for testing. As i said though, it only becomes unplayable during peak times.

I've sent you a PM with some additional information, the program that I suggested in the PM is very cool, and will help us find the issue once and for all!

Is that the MTR program i was told to use? Cause I sent data to you guys twice already now and haven't received any feedback. I have also used my WA account for an extended period of time and not once have I had a problem with Packet loss. As Masik3R stated it seems to happen in the evenings, and carries on til midnight and just after. Lowest I have had on my AH account in the evenings is 7%. And it ranges anywhere from that to 40%-50%

The program I asked Masik3R to use is this one: Visual Route, it basically maps out the route to a destination IP, then also maps out peering points, firewalls and pretty much everything else between your IP and the destination IP.

I seriously doubt that it is a capacity issue affecting you both, but with this we'll be able to figure out exactly what is happening with your connection during the evenings.

And what about the test results that I PM'ed? Your network Tech was going to let you have feedback that evening regarding it? Any news on that?

Sorry about the lack of news! A few changes were made to the routing, but I take it there hasn't been any noticeable changes?

None whatsoever. And it seems im not the only one having issues with it. Like i mentioned earlier, it seems to be something on the MTN network, since, as i mentioned before, switching over to Axxess results in the exact same packet loss.

And it only happens during peak times? between 5/6pm through to 11pm?

Hmm.. Sounds like the same thing people were complaining about on the forum during the last IPC issues in November.
