Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hey AfriPeeps...

My general connectivity down in CPT is stable at the moment [10mbps Capped].
The issue - USENET is timing out horribly. Downloading at 7KB/s if that :(.

What gives?
Is there another problem with that? Or is there throttling (don't expect this) to alleviate the real-time protocols?
Trace to news.afrihost.co.za below.
Issue logged with the mothership (the callcentre). I was promised feedback sometime tonight - heard nothing yet.

Regards,
SD

Since Afriman said that some of the uncapped users were bypassing their shaping and using p2p to basically kill Afrihost's IPC my guess would be that they've just implemented blanket p2p restrictions in an effort to make sure everything else runs fine. Lets hope it's only temporary.

It's that time of the night for Afrihost.

So during the day 0kb/s on news server...now 11pm full 4mbps! Capped is supposed to be unshaped...what's going on?! I had business uncapped 4mb and it was blazing fast all the time

Capacity issues, that's what. And there is no denying it unfortunately, they have to shape nntp and P2p on all their products otherwise they would have no capacity left and the network would fall over.

Thing is, I happen to pay for an unshaped package. The little bit that I download, I do expect to get what I pay for.

Ya exactly, the capped accounts are unshaped as per the website so...unacceptable

In response to the recent posts (above) on shaping...
Evidence appears to support the shaping suggestion.
I can however understand this given strain the network is taking.

The issue I have is the lack of transparency and particularly the lack of a response to my Support Call logged with the call center, which I was assured would be responded to before EOD Friday. Sadly I've still heard nothing.

... Sadly the others are just as bad :(. The positive aspect with AH is that the engagement on MyBB is good. That's more than I can say about the poor AH call center experience.

Rgds,

hmmm, having issues with nntp traffic. Getting timeouts on connections yet server responds to pings etc.

The other ISPs are better, but it depends on what you are doing. Afrihost was good as they were a catch all, and could cater for all sorts of people doing all sorts of things.

One now has to critically look at your usage, NNTP/torrents/streaming and what hours you need certain protocols to be working and then pick an ISP based on that.

Yes, in SA they are all pretty crap due to the cost of IPconnect, so you have to pick one that makes you happy most of the time.
Afrihost used to be that one, especially their capped and business accounts. But the wheels have been falling off slowly for the last year or so with all the issues they've been experiencing.

It sucks, I've recommended them to many people and had many referrals to them but when I am paying you money for non service I have no loyalty to you anymore.
