Afrihost Capped DSL Feedback

That latency looks pretty horrid! :(

It looks like it's starting on your line or Exchange looking at the bras.afrihost.com results. Do you get that sort of latency throughout the day?
Could only get to reply now but half an hour later everything ran at full line speed again and decided to call it a night...so not to sure if there was a momentary lapse but it lasted about 15 mins or so

If you notice something like that happen again, please let me know! If it is something that re-occurs we need to figure out what's happening.

now I start to download a new file, it goes back to full speed now.
But if you can find out what is the reason behind I will be appreciated. :)

but at least that is fine now. :)

PS: it is google.com I don't think that they will limit the download speed.

the 150Kb/s issue is back again.

I really don't know that is the problem from afrihost / from google. :cnofused:

I'm going to send you a PM with a Test Account quickly that I want you to try out quickly.

Shaping probably classifies it as download once it goes over certain size, and then throttles it.

I don't think that's the case here... But we'll get to the bottom of it!

What sort of throughput were you getting on your line? The playback rate looks very very low for a 720p video. :(

I didn't manage to capture that data at the time, I was too busy trying to get the stream to run. :p

Both 720P and 1080P were struggling, I would expect YT to run better as we now have local servers or am I wrong?

edit: Also these tests were taken around 11PM, is 11PM considered peak time now?

You are correct that we have local CDNs and caches for Youtube. In some cases content may still need to be pulled from an overseas server if it isn't available locally.

I also find YouTube battling to stream in HD around 11PM. That's when the shaping is noticeable. But most of the time it's not noticeable for me

OK

What should I do going forward if this problem continues?

Also a really long time ago I had my line synced at 6Mbps instead of 8Mbps. Would it be possible to resync it at 8 and see if it's still stable? See tests below

Drop me a PM with your DSL line number I'll ask our Openserve Service Manager to check if the sync can be pushed up.

If you notice Youtube performance dropping off, can you please run a speedtest, then just take a screenshot the Stats for Nerds window in Youtube please.
