Afrihost Capped DSL Feedback

I'm not going through that again. Last time that ended up with you bumping down my line for four days with no recompense.

:(

We do need to figure out on a way forward to get your connection running as it should be.

Have to say something really strange is going on. I've been running on Crystal web the last week, but switched back to Afrihost again tonight. And the obvious latency problem is still here.
The strange part is that in Durbanville I have this issue, but a friend in Brackenfell does not. I even gave him my account details to make sure it's not an account isssue. And my account is unshaped vs his shaped.

So the issue is stranger than just general latency in the South.

From our side both accounts would route via the same PoP in the South, where our management services live for that region. So the only differentiating factor would be the exchange.

It's definitely something to look into. How many users having a poor experience are also in Durbanville? We know it's an area which has battled with congestion - at one point the exchange was upgrade 4 or 5 times in one year, to my knowledge.

You have multiple people, on this thread even, that have latency increases. Do you not have a support person living within Cape Town? He is probably experiencing the same issues.

We do have someone in Cape Town who tests for us regularly. We also have several testing servers setup at different DC's which we can use for testing (they are connecting to a normal ADSL line at the data centre).

We also test with as many clients as we can and collate with data from social media (incl forums) and our support centre.

So your friend in Brackenfell performed the same traceroutes as you during peak hours and had no latency issues on Afrihost?

I'm located in Panorama, Northern Suburbs and with my rudimentary knowledge of my PSTN routing - it's CPE -> remote ISAM -> Exchange in Voortrekker Road, Parow -> Central Office in Bellville - and I also suffer with the higher than normal latency during peak hours.

But the issue is not present on other ISP accounts, so i wouldn't seem to think anything of exchange related issues..

@Afrihost

I've noticed something with Twitch livestreams: A few days ago I wasn't able to achieve any higher than 400-500KB/s on a stream, IIRC DNS servers 169.1.1.3 and .10 were automatically assigned.

Dialled into Vox and it was peaking at 800-950KB/s resulting in no buffering or loss of frames.

Reconnected again to my Afrihost account but this time DNS servers 169.1.1.2 and .9 were assigned - and after that traffic was reaching around 900KB/s?!

Now I was under the impression DNS servers would not affect traffic throughput, only name resolution speed? Do you think the above is just a coincidence or that there is something else at play here?

Trying to stream video from a server in Europe and getting max 2mb/s on a 100mb/s line. Normally plays 100% but something is not right with the Afrihost network today.

My line has been giving ups and downs as well. It's ok for one week then suddenly I can't stream any low quality vids from Youtube or FB. Buffers most of the time.

Hmmmm, that does seem like something more than a coincidence... And with the current name servers the Twitch stream has been stable the whole time?

I personally find that it is due to horrible quality international bandwidth with Afrihost. Can stream an 8k YouTube video with out an issue (Don't need or can't use 8k but just used for testing) thanks to Google having local servers but try to watch from an international server and everything falls apart.

Which stream are you having trouble with? How are your download speeds looking at the moment?

:(

That's not cool! Is your DSL line sync intermittently dropping, or just the throughput?
