when i made this post just before 9pm local browsing was just about dead with international a bit better
after speaking to other people using ah it looks like i was not the only one with this problem

You've PM'ed me your details before.

It's possible that if there any significant uploads running on your connection you may have seen a disruption in your download speeds.

Do you have anything like Dropbox running?

@Electrofreeze - I'd suggest limiting upload speed on your router to 90% of line sync. I moved from an old device to a new and hit the bufferbloat issue. Since limiting the upload I've had no issues whatsoever.

@AfriGenie - Hi. Sent you a PM late last night. The test account didn't work. Let me know when you have new details.

Just some feedback on the best/fastest service I ever received from Telkom. My line is with Afrihost and earlier this week I had some terrible speeds with something very wrong. I reported this via PM to @AfriGenie and he looked in to it. Seams there was issues at my exchange and this was sorted after a day or so, but my line speed wasn't what it's suppose to be, so I told Genie about this though not a critical issue since I at least had a 5 MB connection and could do my work.
Genie reported this to Telkom around 12:00 yesterday and around 16:30 a Telkom tech calls me to tell me that he unfortunately won't make it out to my place, but that he will come first thing in the morning. This morning the Telkom tech pitched up, did some tests, whent to the exchange, came back to me and back to the exchange again. The problem isn't solved yet since he couldn't trace it, but he'll investigate further and get back to me.
Seriously the fastest response I ever got from Telkom and I'm sure Genie had a very big hand in hurrying them up.

Wow, this is amazing feedback! I thought I could smell smoke coming out of AfriGenie's keyboard... ;)

DSTV Catchup downloads are at a crawl

@The AfriPeeps
Alright guys I've done the DSTV Explorer download tests using a test account (from AfriGenie) and my capped AH account. The outcome is ...

- AH capped account - downloads 8 seconds of content during the 30 second buffer fill.
- Test account - downloads 60 seconds of content during the 30 second buffer fill.
The test account works as my AH capped account used to. Until begining of Feb or thereabouts.
There is clearly an issue... and a signifcant one at that.

Hope we can crack this.

I don't have Showmax so can't test it however thought I'd drop in the traces for that given the issues that Hummercellc noted.

You just need to go to the ClientZone, there you will choose Connectivity, then you will select your DSL account. Under Edit Package you will be able to select the Cancel option.

If you want to cancel your DSL line you will need to follow the same process for that.

So I've cancelled with Afrihost & gone with option 3 which I've mentioned on the previous page (double data + double speed). Now if I understand correctly Afrihost will only process the cancellation after 30 days and then only app 3-5 days later will my line be managed by Axxess?

Meaning I will only enjoy double my current speed in +/- 35 days time???

WHY AfriGenie, WHYYY?

Seriously feels like I'm being throttled on my capped account. 30-50kb/s max on twitch and facebook, 120kb/s on youtube, 150kb/s on p2p, 5mb on speed test and 800kb/s on Steam downloads. Very inconsistent ping and packet loss on international servers for gaming. This is on 8mb line. Issue has been happening since mid Feb. Originally thought my line was the cause (requested downgrade to 4mb) but everything is 100% on my WebAfrica account besides occasional line desync

If you went the AH+ Route you would've saved a lot more. Just the 3 month rollover isn't offered

news.afrihost.co.za is not working for more than a week, anybody else with same issue?

AH DNS servers slower than expected

Hi guys,

My modem is using DNS servers 169.1.1.1 and 169.1.1,9. This is auto set from AH.
I need to hard set the DNS servers so I've been checking latency to each.
I've noted relatively high latencies to the AH servers.

1. When compared with Telkom's CPT server (wblv-ip-dns.saix.net), AH's 169.1.1.2 averages 74ms compared to Telkom at 22ms. Why is this so? I've included traces below.

169.1.1.2

I'd off course want to use AH's DNS servers for local CDN's etc, however something isn't right with 169.1.1.2.

Thoughts please.

news.afrihost.co.za is not working for more than a week, anybody else with same issue?

Nope. It's working for me. I'm in CPT.
There is however an interesting note. Download executing yesterday outside of 00h00 to 08h00 performed at 1.5MB/s compared to the download after 00h00, which performed at 1.9MB/s. Not the first time I've noted the difference. It's just one of the many reasons I'd like AH to be transparent with respect to shaping. I already requested this be made available. Suggestion was taken onboard. Let's keep pushing for the right outcome i.e.: transparency.

New.afrihost.co.za doesn't work for me either, hasn't since beginning of March.

Hmmm. That's odd.
Did you try the "Test" option from Config --> Servers. Try a couple of times. It sometimes say's it can't find the server.

My config is as follows:
Code:
Host: news.afrihost.com
Port: 119
Username:
Password:
Connections: 10
Retention time: 0 days
Timeout: 120 seconds
SSL ~ unchecked
Backup server ~ Unchecked
Optional ~ Unchecked

It's the only Enabled service.

I can connect to the server and it says test successful but when it tries to download anything, it has zero throughput. Other servers work fine.

Facebook videos are honestly horrible. Only issue that I'm having is Facebook videos. Can someone improve the experience?

Seems like I'm not the only one getting these slow speeds from Afrihost. After much debate with the online team, and me telling them that I've been throttled and shaped, they've finally admitted to it. Got myself unshaped, but now it seems like it's worse. What am I actually paying for here?

VDSL 20mbps line
Ping: 146ms
Down: 50.5 KBps
Up: 151KBps

Not a good experience tonight... As with most nights and always starts around 8pm. How is this still a thing?
