Hi

I relocated to Cape Town and finally got ADSL today (Thanks Telkom for the month long wait to install a phone line).

I signed up for an Afrihost Capped package and now realised that I should have first checked how badly they shape capped accounts after their recent announcement of doing so.

Can anyone give me an idea of how bad they do it? And at what times? I am currently on an 8mb line...

I know they say they only shape during "peak congestion," but how often has it been happening?

Thanks!

The Shaped Capped accounts receive a much higher priority than our Uncapped accounts, this means that we'll try to shape the Shaped Capped accounts as little as possible.

I would recommend trying out the Shaped Capped account first, you will always have the option to upgrade to an Unshaped Capped account later.

Read the AH Capped DSL thread. That paints the picture of the situation in CPT.

Is there any way to tell if you're being shaped in the client zone? I vaguely remember something indicating if you were being shaped or not in the client zone when I had an uncapped account.

I have been rolling with a shaped capped account for a few months now. Can't say I have noticed any shaping.

At the moment if you're on an Uncapped account you will be able to see if you're being shaped from the ClientZone.

Our Team is working on implementing something similar for the Shaped Capped accounts.

The shaping on the Shaped Capped accounts isn't intended to be something that happens regularly and it's definitely a good thing that you haven't noticed it. :)

Been like this for over a week and a half for some odd hours a day but returned to normal after a while on each occasion.
Writing exams, require the net and it's remaining like this AND I am on the unshaped, capped 8mbps DSL.
What on Earth is going on Afrihost!?

That's definitely not shaping. :(

There was an issue in the East on Saturday and this affected throughput on all DSL accounts.

It has been resolved, and your speeds should be back to normal now.
