hey,i joined Afrihost about a week ago and noticed a few things that i am not happy with.Downloads would be stuck at 20kbps-30kbps,on a capped account. After they experienced login problems and resolved it, i noticed that my download speeds had improved slightly.i sometimes use a file server to download and it doesnt restrict download speeds. When i would use Afrihost on the file server it would move between 130kpbs for a moment, then go to 80kbps and then 20kpbs and then between 60kbps-100kbps.When i used Afrihost on the mentioned file server,it would never complete the download.

Things i have noticed on WebAfrica capped:

*webpages seem to load faster
*i experienced better download speeds on the file server mentioned above
*download speeds on the file server ranged from 80kbps-205kbps,it actually maintained 200kbps for a while.
*Web Africa completed the download on server, when Afrihost never did.i feel like webafrica is able to maintain higher download speeds,if that makes sense.

I live in durban, i am less than 3km away from my exchange and have a 2mb line.

Conclusion: I chose Afrihost cos they seem to be popular on mybroadband,i do like the way calls are handled(they seem professional and i dont wait too long on the line) and i also like the fact that they reply to emails quickly. However,i feel like i will be getting a better connection with WebAfrica.i will stick out 1month with Afrihost and if things dont improve will be moving.I like Afrihost as a company but it seems ever since they have used Mtn infrastructure things have gone somewhat downhill(from what i have read on my bb comments)

*update:i used the trial webafrica account to watch a 720p youtube video on my phone and it didnt need to buffer.Afrihost seems to buffer a lot when i use youtube.

I did tests yesterday between the two (I'm at 20mbit though). I found webafrica shaped me on a ftp transfer to about 10mbit, afrihost I could max out line if I downloaded two files at once. Webafrica relaxed enough to let me do the dual file thing round about 10pm (I did the tests at 8), otherwise neck and neck.

Just wait till you try any form of international streaming.

Thats kinda what won me over to webafrica come end of month, afrihost used to be full of awesome for basically everything but as soon as the business account became basically the standard account for people to use and IPC's got full well... things changed and thus I changed.

If afrihost was like it was 6 months ago I'd be with them though

I've got a normal Afrihost 50GB capped account on a 2Mb/s line and I manage to stream Youtube, Netflix and Hulu without any issues whatsoever.

Afrihost Capped accounts work fine for streaming. Afrihost Business accounts dont, even though we are told they are the same.

I also have a 50gb afrihost capped account on 2mb line. There are too many requirements needed in order to get a good speed from adsl.I think the infrastructure in cape town is better, hence you get better speeds.I had awesome speeds on my telkom mobile 60+60gig and even did gaming sometimes.i wish Lte was cheaper in this country and had bigger caps.It is pathetic that our minimum speed is 2mb,i wonder if telkom will ever increase it.

Hey hey hey! Be grateful they did increase it recently from 1mb/s. Remember the days you had friends over jamming Dota 1 on a 384kb/s line?

192 -> 384 -> 1mb -> 2mb has been the free upgrade chain hasnt it ?

Sorry to hear that your initial experience is not going all that well. I guess it all comes down to what services are important to you and how you perceive your experience.

I would love to chat to you about what we can do to make this better from our side. If you're keen on that, please drop me a PM :(

Hey hey hey! Be grateful they did increase it recently from 1mb/s. Remember the days you had friends over jamming Dota 1 on a 384kb/s line?

I can remember jamming on a 192kb/s line and relying on the "big boys" with they MASSIVE 512kb/s lines to "host".

Yes!! Ahh Them Gods surely was perceived as generous beings by us mere mortals.

I managed to get a 1gig test account from Afrihost today.I dont understand what is happening,i am getting faster speeds on the 1gig account than on my 50gig capped account.

I wonder maybe the free 1GB accounts are sat3 and the other accounts all use different cables.

Im not impressed at all ,my streaming on youtube requires to much buffering now.i have given up,i will give my months notice and join WebAfrica.if you guys have any suggestions about isp,i will appreciate it.i am looking for an isp that has decent/reliable speeds on a 2mb line and good customer service.thanx for trying to help Afriman but not keen on u guys anymore, sorry. These infrastructure and login problems have also left me with a bad impression.

I am on the 2mb 50Gb cap bundle and getting constant 211kb/s download rate.

So it seems fine here in Stellenbosch?

I want to go foe the 4mb/s 200GB cap promo next month. Will that be possible Afriman?
