Who is a decent hosting company? I've had it up to my ears with Afrihost and need to start moving my accounts.
I was informed I had to move one of my hosting packages to a more expensive one and it just caused endless issues, resulting in a website being deleted and not able to be restored. That's pretty sad from a hosting company, you had one job.
Should I move back to Hetzner? I suppose I can expect things to break on Afrihost side during the move right?

Absolutely not, if the provider deleted the content then they’re responsible for restoring it - and all hosting providers should have daily backups
Are we going to talk in woulda, shoulda circles now?

Wouldn't the OP have been in a much better situation if he had a copy of this website safely stored ?

After 20 years in the industry I have learned that the responsibility of any data backup should never rest "with some one else".

@MightyQuin, completely agree that one should take responsibility of backing up your own data.
Most if not all all hosting providers have a section in their terms of use/terms and conditions stating that its the clients responsibility to make backups and if they do provide backups, they cant be held responsible for how complete the backups are.
But with that being said, if a hosting provider moves and loses your site I can completely understand why OP would be ticked off :P

Agreed. If you run an online business or are willing to invest in a website, the least you can do is have your hosting company keep a backup and you yourself make regular backups too and keep it safe with you. No excuses around this, else a website is just a part-time hobby with no interest from the owner.

Filezilla is your friend...

In general though it is best practice to have multiple types of backups, both cloud based and local.

Sorry to hear about your issues, thats not standard practice at all.

Hi Jade. I'm busy trying to optimise my sites as much as possible, and one area I'm struggling with is server response time (time to first byte). Currently I get a perfectly average 400+ms with my existing host and I'm wondering if that can't be improved upon. The internet tells me <100ms is desirable. Of all the major SA hosts whose homepages I've tested, only smartweb.co.za killed it with 40-60ms TTFB. Absolute Hosting gets over 700ms. All these figures could be meaningless if only certain hosting tiers or optimisation efforts achieve max performance.

I see you around MyBB frequently and you seem very knowledgeable. Do you have any info about server response times and how <100ms can be achieved (or if it is even worth the trouble)?

Morning Bryn - I'll be honest and state that Im not the most clued up on TTFB as its something that I recently started playing with.
Based on my tests though the results are subjective to where you are testing from and the OS / http server thats running on the server.
TTFB is important despite there being contradictory statements about it saying that its not important.
Our 700 ms is high, and possibly due to the fact that we have php hosted on IIS and for this reason we're busy with a deployment of our sites to new servers running centos with litespeed.

We're using openlightspeed on our new directadmin server and our own testing has shown very low ttfb results, including page speed when compared to other providers.

For our test we took a clients website and copied it onto the new DA server and with the aid of wp litespeed plugin were able to improve the site speed dramatically.

You and others are more than welcome to order a free account and do some testing on our servers if you are interested.

Wow! That's awesome. Thanks Jade. I just signed up now. I'll test things out and see how it compares.

This. So much this. YOU are responsible for YOUR websites, not the host.

Show me the T&C's where it is agreed that the host will cover both the costs of backups and restoring data (should it be required).
