Been chatting to an a/h rep but I'm not understanding the price structure here. Maybe someone who's signed up can help.

The Afrihost fixed LTE email states:
The problem is we're giving everyone who's quick enough to snap them up a full R1,500 off. So it's only R999 once off (which is a ridiculously good price for this Cat 6, 4xMIMO, LTE-A router)

If I go to the signup page, there's two options:

R199 sim only
R249 sim + device

741299

I don't understand what the R249 is for when all I want is what the email offered: R199 + R999 router? Am I missing something obvious here? The R249 p/m makes no sense, unless the R249 is sim + R999 device + some other cost I can't figure out.

The 199 is sim only package and the 249 is sim + router. If you take the package and then cancel, you pay only R999.

Actually a good question.. i am also interested in an afrihost product soon.

Perhaps the R999 is subsidised in the R249 a month fee, where as the 199 is not?

Yeaaa.. i think its rather confusing at first.. once you hit the checkout on the R199 option you should be propted to buy the router at R999

Yeah, that's what I was expecting too. The email opens with the R199 sales pitch and attempts to seal the deal with the R999 once off for the router, but upon signing up there's no such deal available. If you want a router it's R249 per month which kinda makes the sales pitch in the email pointless.

Try go all the way to almost the end of the R199 deal.. i bet there is an option at R999 for router to be added to basket?

The rep I was speaking to said:

REP:
So Sim only - R199pm
Sim + device is R999 up front and then R249pm
So what's the R249 for if I'm paying R999 for the device?
REP: It's just how they've priced that deal.

Which didn't really clear anything up for me.

As I mentioned in the PM, just see them as separate offers. The difference between the R199 and R249 is not a payback, that deal is just priced differently.

So the email is a bit misleading then. Because it kinda gives the impression the deal is R199 with the device for a once off fee of R999. The R249 still makes no sense when compared to what the email was selling.

And it starts from only R199 per month.

Thousands of our clients have already claimed this special in the last week alone and many are already enjoying pure joy on the fastest LTE network in SA.

So if the wait for Fibre is getting you down, or you want a faster connection than you have right now, then this may be the right solution for you

Here's the only problem:

We don't have many of these routers left.

The problem is we're giving everyone who's quick enough to snap them up a full R1,500 off. So it's only R999 once off (which is a ridiculously good price for this Cat 6, 4xMIMO, LTE-A router)

I don't think Gian's email explicitly links them together, but I totally get how you might think that it's one deal. I have mentioned this up the chain.

Ok so setting aside the email...

If sim only is R199, and
sim + device is R249 + R999

There's still the weird difference in price. I still can't figure out what the extra R50 (R249 vs R199) is for when I'm already paying for the device @ R999. Basically I can't buy a sim for R199 and a device for R999. If I want the device too I have to pay R249 + R999.

the R50 is for the router which is R999 cash but R1250 over 24 months, you cant fight afrihost over this because if you dont want to pay for the extra R50 per month you can take the sim card only option which has no R50 and buy your router from the cash R999

I had the same discussion with them yesterday - it doesn't make sense at all. On the one hand, they tell you the router is discounted, but then, on the other hand, they want you to pay an extra R50 per month, which means the router is not discounted as advertised.

This is a really weirdly structured deal that they cannot explain themselves. Add to that the fact that the router image shows its from Telkom (actually Huawei), and that its limited to 30Mbps.

I spoke to a salesperson yesterday who was adamant that the router only supports 30 Mbps, and when I pointed out the technical specification says otherwise, I was told: "go and Google it". Which I did while I was on the line, and then she Googled it herself, at which point her only response was "Sorry for the inconvenience".

Afrihost sales and support seems to be going down the toilet rapidly. I ended up backing out of the deal entirely due to the weird structuring and lack of solid answers.

1) It's a Huawei product - not Telkom
2) Total cost: R2499. Once-off: R999. Claimed saving: R1500. Extra charges R1200 (R50 * 24)
3) Who wants an LTE-A router that is limited to 30 Mbps?

Yeah, and I'm asking you why they're priced differently. The router is presumably accounted for with the R999, so why the extra R50 for the sim + device option?

I agree with this. Smoke and mirrors. I'm guessing there's one of their classic R999 6-month claw back clauses as well meaning they'll get at least an extra R300 over and above the R999 for the router.

It makes sense to cancel the package and migrate back to a sim-only deal as soon as you can, but for some it may not be worth the time and effort... Profit for Afrihost.
