I am thinking of moving from iBurubbish to Afrihost. I see that the line is shaped - does that have a major impact on gaming after hours? Anyone with experience on this? Otherwise any other recommendations?

i use afrihost for playing WoW on the eu server and get bewteen 580-720ms latency

580 - 720 is pretty bad right?

I will primarily be playing Aion - and right now the PvP is impossible for me to take part in due to the lag issues with iBurst.

yeah thats bad, and i too cannot play PvP so yeah.... and adsl is supposed to be better lol

Actually for MMORPG's most of the time I have found that 3G is in fact the best for your latency.

However any local gaming servers are perfect with Afrihost. I personally use them for COD4 and Quake Live and my ping is not higher than 35ms.

International is always going to be high.

All of my ping on all of my mmos has been around 350-550 ms. Above 500 it usually becomes unplayable. I am on a 384 on mweb, and I am confused. Why is the ping so much worse for you guys?

Well, 550ms sure beats 30secs which is what iBurst have graced me with today - but in general 500ms - 2s is what I have to look forward to.

lol I tried gaming with a 3g card once, I got logged every 2-5 mins.

I would recommend G-Connect for gaming.

Ping to local gaming servers like saix/igame/IS is never higher than 35ms.
I get pings to the UK 195ms-210ms and 300ms to the US. Trust me you can just buy R25 and test it for yourself. Local is brilliant and International is just as good.

@ only R37 per GB and R35 per Gb over weekends ohh and don't forget They actually cap you when you reach your limit and it seems to be unshaped cause I get the same ping/speed 24/7 peak and off peak. And its Prepaid. So its perfect for gaming. just buy R25 and it will stay there for very very long if you don't use it.

cavedog - which of their products are you refering to? Wi-Fi, 3G or ADSL? Or all 3?

adsl cause I use it at my home. Never used wifi/3G with games before so i wouldn't know sorry.

But the ADSL ping is just brilliant. Local pings are the same as IS very low. But international its WAY better than IS. It seems G-Connect is using vodacom in some way cause G-Connect give you a IP that belongs to Vodacom.

I can only comment on ADSL and it the best out yet. Cheapest too cause remember since its prepaid @ R37 a GB its cheaper than afrihost which makes it the cheapest Prepaid out now.

I would recommend this cause you get good local and International ping. With IS[afrihost] accounts you get good local pings but international is NOT very good.

Basically its up to you. I'm just saying you can get a R25 topup via eft and it won't expire so you can test which one is the best for you. For me. G-Connect wins hands down!

I am so gonna try them and will post my experience here - thanks!

I use afrihost and experience no issues when playing eve-online. There's no ingame indication what my lat is. Pinging to their network it seems to be on ave 400ms more or less.

What I found when I used to play wow was, varying results. I recall with a telkom internet shaped account, on killrogg EU, I got around 350-400ms. On Lightbringer EU, it was 800-1000ms. When switching to an unshaped account (which it forced me to do, running away when Aran did the whole arcane blast thing became more of an issue than winning lotto, as was grabbing the beams on netherspite.), my lat on LB only went from the insane 800-1000 to around 500-600ms. However, on Killrogg its down to 200ms.

This is also something to consider. Killrogg was in London, LB was in Paris. As a rule of wrist, you can forget about playing anything FPS like on an international server. Tested true with BF2 and IL-2 was actually funny with the crappy lat. ;)

As far as I know Afrihost are offering prices @ R29 a Gig - but this sounds like a good option nonetheless.

Well aren't you uplifting.

Just remeber that Afrihost R29/GB is not prepaid. The R39/gb is the prepaid option

This G-Connect account is R37 prepaid. So you won't loose it the end of the month if you haven't used it all. Afrihost if you don't use it you will loose it cause it doesn't carry over to the next month. Hence its a monthly account. :)
