if i sign up with afrihost , do i get my full 3 gigs ready for use for the month and then afterwords just topups ?? what happens if my prorata portion is up ? also doing it via CC , so will it be fast and ready in say about 20minutes ? i use about 5-10 gigs and im not sure if uncapped is best option for gaming/downloading YET... getting mixed feelings ?!

does the data carry over on month to month as it doesnt look like it ....

at the beginning of the month ill create either accounts lol. dont know if other post like this has already been posted . but sorry !

no, first prorata for the current month, then the full 3Gigs in the new month.

Why don't you get a 5Gb account instead of a 3Gb account? Remember the topups does not rollover so any topups you've purchased will be lost when the new month starts.

.....want to start out small to test the service :) . so if i sign up now ill get 409 MB ? then the month after that ill get full 3 gigs ? im hitting a blank wall somewhere haha !!

Topups will be instant. Isn't there a R14.50 special still running? Might be cheaper to keep the smaller bundle and taking advantage of the top-up special....

As for setting up/creating your account , it takes them 30minutes+ to verify your ID [which you must email] . Since it's a public holiday [and after 5pm] , no idea if this is even going to happen today....so i wouldn't get my hopes up.

Since i went through Afrihost, Axxess and WebAfrica's sign up processes, i know Axxess is the fastest and seems to be fully automated (i.e can sign up in the middle of the night) , Afrihost seems to still have an actual person to confirm your details and Web Africa is a mixture , they activate instantly, but deactivate when a person is there to verify your account [and then they reactivate after they phoned/verified your account .

So if you sign up with Afrihost during Office Hours, 30 minutes or so , after hours/weekends , dunno , might be screwed until the next working day.

Now Axxess on the other hand is instant, no nonense, no extra documentation required.

ill have to snoop around for axxess on the forums now to check how the packages are , as i dont really want to send in confirmation of id , flight license , driving license , home adress of secret base vault 101 . etc etc . thats like getting inside the personal space bubble when i sign up i want it quick and easy and hassle free lol . i know its for security sakes , we also do that at our company . but ... no thanks

Well, Afrihost requires a copy of your ID / Drivers ...until then your account won't be active.

Here's the Axxess equivalent : http://www.axxess.co.za/lite.php

BUT i don't think it's pro-rata . When i signed up for the 1GB [mid april] , i got the full 1GB , but R19 is also pretty cheap though.

Anyway, i'm on Afrihost uncapped and got Axxess/WA for 1GB "experiments" to determine whether my uncapped is performing "on par" :) . The Axxess Lite accounts are unshaped too, but i couldn't notice a difference between that and Afrihost at all. Exact same results, both use IS and both go via Seacom and both have the same issues with speed/connectivity internationally [last few days]. But yea R19 p/gb is still cheaper than R29 p/gb .

Afrihost's top-up system is definitely easier than Axxess' system though. Axxess got some weird "temporary upgrade" thing going [on the Lite accounts in the link] , where Afrihost you buy your xGB and click ok, done and it's there.

hmmm , i wonder how much the topup is (in terms of R vs GB ) for the temporary upgrade then ? ill give it a go with around 5gb . since its almost the end of the month and data doesnt carry over , time to rash :p

It will still be R19 p/gb , you basically "temporarily upgrade" to a higher account. Example, if you are on a 5GB account and you want 1GB more, you "temporarily upgrade" to the 6GB account and then just pay for the extra 1GB. You then continue to do this and then you're "downgraded" back to 5Gb the next month. Kinda annoying, but technically just a long-winded way of doing top-ups.

I don't get all the resistance to sending your ID to ISPs. It's law. It's not like they want to invade your "personal space bubble." Get over it already.

Well i don't think people necissarily have a big issue with the principle of it. As this thread might illustrate, people don't want to be inconvenienced with constant "paper work" [regardless of how fast the process might be] . Sending in your ID means

a] You need to scan it [people don't tend to keep scanners around at home for the odd ID-scan]
b] You need to fax it [who keeps that around at home?]
c] You need to email it [you're signing up for internet/ISP account hence quite often you might not have immediate access to internet in the first place...kind of a catch 22 ]
d] All above can only happen in office hours and with a delay due to the manual action required.

Now i know some companies accept a cellphone photo, which might be easy enough, but you don't always see that.

So if you can skip it all, why wouldn't you? It's always a schlep doing these things if you don't have the facilities at your work. Of course if you're a business user, you will have these things all sorted, but as a end-user who might be something ranging from a student to your grandmother, it's always a schlep.

Absolutely agree. At the risk of derailing this thread, any idea how tourists/visitors would sign up for prepaid SIM cards? Especially with the WC coming, I am sure there will be people wanting to buy prepaid packages.

Heh, i think the thread was pretty much derailed when the OP stated he went for the Axxess deal.

Anyhow, no idea, i assume it will work similar to overseas where your passport is used as a form of RICA-proof . When i bought an Orange prepaid sim in Holland, i had to phone some "Activation Helpdesk" [on the prepaid sim] first , they basically would ask questions about where i am from , how long i'm staying etc etc and then activate the sim.

Only trouble is, not sure our helpdesks are as efficient as Orange's were [no waiting time, friendly and clearly understandable person on the other end and even giving you some extra touristy information at the same time ].
