So, I have Afrihost Pure LTE, 100Mbps package. I've had it since January 2025, after I ran over the FUP on my 50Mbps and I upgraded to the new, faster package.

Since I got it, I never had issues with the package, except for an outage here and there, but it happened maybe 3 or 4 times, and each time a quick chat to Support on WhatsApp, a router reset (brand new router, FYI) and it is fine again. After the last issue in July, my Speedtest results came back with a ping of 25, download speed of 93Mbps and an upload speed of 40Mbps. This is the norm that I have been used to since I got the 100Mbps package. Hitting 100Mbps has never been that hard over here.

However, in the past 2 months or so, service on this package has been atrocious. My first support query to them in this period was on 21 July 2025, when there was a total system outage. No connection, no anything, and no communication from Afrihost on this either. I had to postpone client meetings as there was simply no connectivity.

On 1 August I had terrible speeds again, that a router reboot fixed. Then the fun started.

6 September 2025, I had my first time where I struggled to get 2Mbps on my connection. The best speedtest I ran hit 1.5Mbps, with a 250 ping. I got on Support again, and the person there took me through a ton of steps, setting the router to 4G only, changing authentication info, etc. etc. It did nothing. I spent a long time on support, nothing came of it and eventually I gave up on the issue and went to bed. Next morning all was well again, and this time my speedtest tested up to 30Mbps only. 30 down, 25 up, and that's it.

17 September 2025, the next one hit, and even worse than before. So bad I can't even run a speedtest. When eventually I could get a Speedtest to run, I got a 91 ping, 3.47 down and 26Mbps up. I had to jump through all their hoops again, move the router, switch off all other devices, make sure I'm connected with a cable to the router, etc etc. No success. The support response was "anything over 10Mbps is acceptable, ain't nothing we're going to do about that" and that was it. Again, no success in fixing, went to bed, next morning it was fine again (testing nothing over 30Mbps).

30 September 2025 it hit again. Jumped on support again, did all the hoops again, this time with a ping of around 1,800 to 2,500, depending on the test. Download speeds 1.69 and upload 0.00 on the test I have in front of me from that date. I did ping and tracert tests which both failed. Eventually the support line query timed out because the tests took so damn long the queries were auto-closed. Went to bed, next morning, same issue. I jumped on here and contacted @Afrigirl for help. I got similar responses, but this time I was told that MTN is quietly throttling lines in the background. Keep this in mind. The whole day we chatted back and forth with no resolution. I did a speedtest for them and the result was a ping of 2,703ms, download of 0.48Mbps and upload of 0.0Mbps. She logged a ticket and eventually we had to revert back to the original changes, away from the changes I was told to make by support on the 6th of September. I was also confirmed that I am NOT being throttled by MTN, so that's not the issue. At 18:40 that evening, something happened and it magically improved again, up to 8Mbps down and up. Only on the 2nd of October did it return to 30 down and 17 up again (once again, 30 down, max).

Yesterday, I had a complete outage again. At just before 11AM, when meetings were starting, nothing worked. Most of the lights on the router dropped to dead, so there was literally nothing, with internet coming through in drips and drabs. Support did the same ****, with no success, and I got SMSes stating that there are issues with a tower from someone. Yet, on Afrihost's Status page, nothing is displayed. Eventually around 16:00 or so, I did a test and found internet speeds back to the 30 down and 25 up again (magically fixed).

So, here's my thing. I bought a 100Mbps package, and managed to EASILY hit that before. I am not being throttled, generally using around 350GB per month, with the package FUP sitting at 500GB. MTN also confirmed I'm not being throttled.

I am down now at least once every 2 weeks, for a whole day. I WFH, permanently, and I cannot continue like this. Afrihost (MTN) is the only realistic option here, as Vodacom is not reliable enough when the power goes out in the area. I live on a smallholding out of town, so fiber isn't an option yet either.

Also, why am I suddenly, OBVIOUSLY, being limited to 30Mbps download speeds? I tested again this morning, and the best I can get is just-just over 30Mbps on the download, and around 25Mbps on the upload. Are we being limited from Afrihost/MTN side, without informing us? If so, the package speeds should be changed to 30Mbps, because it's a lie to advertise 100Mbps when you're being hard limited to 30Mbps.

Also, why is Afrihost's status page not updated with outages and issues when they become aware of them? Omitting this info not only causes a shittonne of frustration, it's also an outright lie to not disclose this to clients. It also negates and nullifies the habit of sending us to the Status page to check for known issues, when they're not even being posted.

Finally, I need an answer on why this keeps happening. To date nobody has told me a single word on why my service is suddenly horseshit. It just fixes itself magically and then everyone goes on their merry way to unicorn land or something, IDK, but there's no communication. If it doesn't improve, I don't know what I'm going to do, but I'll do my utmost best to get away from Afrihost and find some service provider who will actually provide me with a service.

I'm sick and tired of this ****.

Also having issues with mtn throttling me before I even hit my afrihost limit. Best part is the tower is doing fine cause when I use my mtn sim on the same tower I hit 70mbps but I am getting throttled to 10mbps

Hi.

We completely understand how frustrating inconsistent speeds and outages can be, mainly when you rely on your LTE connection for work.

After reviewing your account and our last interaction from 1–2 October, your line is currently active and not being throttled according to the MTN API data we receive. MTN has, however, confirmed directly with our LTE team that they have been applying dynamic traffic management across their LTE network since August 2025. This process is handled entirely by MTN at the tower level, and they do not provide details on which speed limits may apply during this time.

Please note that Afrihost does not apply any additional throttling or speed restrictions beyond MTN’s Fair Use Policy.

We also only post outages on our Status Page once we’ve received official confirmation from MTN, to ensure that the information we share is accurate and verified.

We’ll continue to monitor your service from our side, and if the issue persists, we can log a formal escalation with MTN to investigate further.

@Toxxyc I have a very similar situation than you but only with Axxess (MTN). The last few days of September the max speed I could get was 10Mbs and from October 30Mbs is the maximum I get.

Axxess says I am not being throttled on my 1TB account because I have not passed the FUP. When I use my MTN sim in the router I get 150Mbs immediately switching back to the Axxess sim back to 30Mbs.

Sounds like a "them" problem that they're making a "me" problem without batting an eye.

Unfortunately my wallet is restricted, and options are quite limited.
You are out of luck then:

Yes. The implemented network optimisation by MTN does affect us, and it overrides our own FUP.

This should have been communicated to all their clients as well as be explicitly stated on their website as well.

Why is this not clearly indicated on your website when selecting this package?

And there no other Fixed Wireless options in the area you are in?
There are, but it's not reliable enough. My personal cellphone is Vodacom, and when the power goes in the area the towers that are here suffer tremendously, sometimes losing connection altogether, so it's also not a reliable solution. MTN at least stays on if the area's power goes out.

This. I feel like I'm paying for the 100Mbps package, but in reality I'm sold a 30Mbps package that's much cheaper.

My inlaws have a similar problem staying in voetsek town in the middle of nowhere in the Eastern Cape. This is why we need Starlink. Other satellite services are even more useless than the networks.

Sounds like the 400+400 capped MTN package may work for you? But it's R749 per month compared to R599 of the 100 Mbit/sec uncapped package. But if you can schedule some updates/downloads for 12-5 AM this is maybe an option if the throttling is too difficult/unpredictable.

Yes, I have a 20mb uncapped package at the holiday place.

Can barely use it. Totally useless. Went to the dogs. No Vodacom signal where I am, so that option is out.
Apparently, they are building a new Telkom tower close by.

Guess I will just have to suck it until then.
Really not keen on going with a WISP-type of fixed installation.

Interestingly, after I complained about this, I noticed a change on my network speeds by accident the other day. My latest Speedtest results:

Ping: 44ms
Upload: 81.44Mbps
Download: 23.50Mbps

So something has changed.
