MTN has apologised to subscribers affected by recent service disruptions in the past two weeks, saying that network upgrades and Eskom load shedding were at the heart of the outages.

MTN said that it recently needed to re-engineer its network in certain parts of the country to ensure that it was of an acceptable standard and was capable of satisfying the needs of customers.

“The adjustments were many and they included reviewing how we can optimally utilise the existing spectrum, which entailed re-configuring the current allocation of our spectrum,” said Eben Albertyn, chief technology officer at MTN SA.

As a result of the equipment upgrades undertaken by MTN, some subscribers experienced intermittent service disruptions in and around metro areas.

Load shedding made it worse

MTN went on to say that Eskom’s load shedding exacerbated its disruptions.

It said that although it has batteries and generators at base stations in the event of power failures, these measures offered a limited backup time.

“Furthermore, several hundred sites have been vandalised and batteries have been stolen in recent months,” MTN said.

The network operator said that, where possible, it had deployed batteries to sites to alleviate the impact of power outages.

“We are working tirelessly to ensure there is minimal impact on services and are planning for a speedy completion. We are aware that the demand will spike over the festive season and we remain confident that these interventions will bolster our capacity to meet expected traffic,” said Albertyn.

There were a also number of MTN customers who migrated from Nashua Mobile on 25 November who experienced connectivity problems. These customers were inadvertently disconnected, but according to MTN services were restored on the same day.

“MTN apologises to its customers for any inconvenience caused during this time,” Albertyn said.

Now they have acknowledged the problem, when do they fix it and how do they make it right with their clients?

I pmed AfriGenie about all this.. Just waiting to see what afrihost has to say or feedback they can give

I hear you're troubleshooting this with AfriGenie?
Sounds like the area may be a bit congested during certain times :(
its been on going for 3-4 months now and I use it between 7 -11 when I am at home when I really need it :(

But its getting to point where I am going to cancel it ... I am getting better speeds with my cellc sim that does even have 2 bars of signal.. Getting 0 Feedback from MTN

I know it's frustrating :( If AfriGenie has a PM from you he'll follow things up.

Got the Afrihost 3G thing because Telkom can't provide DSL (no ports).
It does not help though, as MTN can only provide me with 2G. Managed to load the first result page on Google in 2 hours worth of struggling to get anywhere.

MTN does seem to have issues in Somerset West (blaming Eskom), but Vodacom and Telkom Mobile have service in the area.
I will give them until the end of the week, then I will cancel.

It seems that nothing "just works" any more.

If the double data gets dropped it becomes more cost-effective for me to move to ADSL, so I'll be moving on. Even if I stayed mobile, AH would no longer be price-competitive. It's a pity they threw all their eggs into the Plus basket. I suspect most people couldn't give a monkey's about all the extra stuff and just want well-priced data.

After calling a lot of people @ mtn and getting number after number I got to a network tech(afrikaans to :D) That helped me.

I took my cell tower ID gave it to him. He checked on his system and also said its congestion ... everybody climbs on the tower at about 6 and its only starts getting better at 9. He said there is nothing they can do at the to lift traffic from the tower( they will need to build more towers or the people must stop hogging it:p

So I will maybe pause and just move end of the month so fed up with this

Great to hear that you've got some feedback, even if it isn't the best.
MTN are always rolling out improvements on their network, including additional cell towers.

Subbed...

Also any way to get hold of where the courier is? Was dispatched at 9 this morning and was supposed to be delivered between 9 and 1
