Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

Hey there

More than welcome to assist, I can honestly say playing Warzone since lockdown in March up to now I had no packet loss, the times I did have packet loss everyone else playing with me had it as well and they are all on 100mb fibre so we concluded it was the server that had an issue.

My latency (keep in mind I stay in George, Western Cape) is always anywhere between 70ms to 90ms.

Some people don't like those latencies but for me it works. I used to have those latencies on my 4mb ADSL line as well so for me personally it is identical to when I had ADSL.

If you do however stay in JHB or CT I rate you might be used to lower latencies then these and if so I am not sure how that would effect you. I have never had latencies of 50ms and lower so not sure what the difference is if any.

I will post screenshots tonight when I jam again.
Ok cool.. this helps alot.. i am with Telkom here in Durban.. It works good when its working well... other times i get packet loss or ping spikes every now and then.. My mother in down the road getting 90down and 40up.. So i think mine would be about half that as i am in a house and her a flat on 2nd floor.

So i think the MTN with afri might be better for us .. as we also stream netflix dstv now etc..

I can honestly say that MTN/Vodacom is way better for gaming than both Cell C/Telkom. I used all 4 of them and Vodacom is 1st, then MTN and then the rest. The only reason why I chose MTN is because it is the cheapest between the two and Vodacom is still trying to get you on 24month contracts etc. In fact, I have a spare Vodacom LTE sim incase I do get trouble with Afrihost's MTN package but since having it I have had no issues

thanks for the info man, appreciate it

Hi there man, little off topic but, how happy are you playing warzone etc with your package??
i am contemplating moving to the Afrihost Mtn deal 100 and 100gig. My mother has it down my road and its DAMMNN fast.. just wondering about ping etc?
could you post a pic of the latency and packet loss while playing please?
I'm in PTA and get between 40 to 80ms playing CSGo on ZA servers. Doesnt matter if I connect to the router via wifi or wired LAN. I generally play in the evenings after 9pm without problems. I almost never get packet loss issues, though ping spikes can occur.

If the tower is busy in your area, you'll probably have issues but from your mom's experience doesnt sound like it. Number one problem though: if others are using the same connection for e.g. streaming while you game. I found netflix to be more forgiving but dstv now and showmax seem to be more aggressive in hogging the connection (eventhough I've capped all the apps to SD). Best solution was to run 2nd wifi router for streaming and hard cap that router to 2 to 4 mbps DL speeds.

On this note, some routers do allow you to limit the speed per device that is connected. I have the Huawei HG659 router and have this feature. I limited our smart TV to 4MB down and 1MB up. Mobile phones on 1MB up/down and my PC unlimited ;-)

The problem is, and the experts are welcome to jump in here, your router doesn't know what traffic it should prioritize high to low unless you tell it. So if your wife jumps on to Facebook/Pinterest and watches a movie on there for example you might have an issue where the movie she is watching hogs to much bandwidth and you will get stutters/spikes etc. On very high speeds this is not usually an issue since the video buffers gets completed in a instant but for us poor low speeders this is not the case. So if your router does have some sort of bandwidth/speed limiting option I would suggest you fiddle with it to ensure the best results as a gamer.

Alright well i have the B525.. not sure if it has this option?

currently i have lan cable from router to Ps4, 5ghz wifi to my Ematic TV box and then normal 2.4ghz wifi the cells are connected to.

I can't find anything for the B525 specifically but found this on Huawei's website:

Maybe have a look and compare with your B525 if you find settings like that?

I guess browsing + gaming would be fine. I guess it depends on your wife's affinity for facebook cat videos

I should mention I have openwrt firmware running on that 2nd router. It allows me all kinds of limiting and shaping (QoS). My gaming PC is the only client directly connecting to the primary LTE router/modem.

Good morning everyone

I need some assistance please.

So I play Call of Duty Warzone and on 12/06/2020 I stayed up until 00:10 to download the new 40GB update with my Afrihost Fixed LTE 60gb midnight data.

Now, not knowing you should manually restart your LTE router for the midnight data to kick in I went and did the update.

When I woke up the next morning the update was completed and everything was 100% until I went to check my data usage on Afrihost's clientzone and realized the data was almost depleted on my anytime data.

I have now been in contact with Afrihost's support team since then and for some reason they cannot get it fixed for me.

I have ticket numbers and everything but have no idea how to take this further to get it resolved.

Hope someone can shed some light here
Hi @klipdrifter

Sorry to hear that. That's very unusual.

Are you able to inbox me? We can check your logs.

Thanks for @cavedog on sorting me out with my night time data issue. It seems something else on my PC was the culprit for eating up my day time data. Will have to investigate more from my side but my COD update was used by my night time portion.
At the end of last month an unannounced Windows 10 update used around 4GB of my topup bundle!

You can request a copy of your hourly data usage via e-mail from the Client Zone by clicking on the usage graph (view detailed usage history) and then clicking on the Send Logs via E-mail button on the Data Usage Graphs screen. The file is in CSV format. You can usually trace the source of the problem from there. Leaving CNN running in a tab in the background last month also did some serious damage when it randomly started streaming while the PC was left unattended ...

Windows update is the biggest damager on most of our clients on Fixed LTE. The damage is done so quickly too because it's served locally and all the MTN Fixed LTE clients are on LTE-A routers. You can actually see a spike on network graphs when something like that happens.

I would suggest to ALL windows users on metered connections to set scheduling for after midnight.

This routers that Afrihost supply, the so called mtn approved one's, can they take external antenna's.
If you need a router, I would first look at the Classifieds (MyBroadband, Carbonite, OLX, Gumtree) as most of the routers that are currently on sale are close to being discontinued due to out-of-date chipsets etc. You should be able to find something secondhand for <R1000. WebAfrica appears to have some secondhand models for sale - I am not sure whether this offer involves a SIM card purchase. Take a look at the Refurbished routers tab. The B618 would be a better choice than the B525 since it is a Cat 9 device while the B525 is only a Cat 6 item which should be slower.

What is a refurbished router?
