Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

I see the 5GB + 5GB is now showing under the Pure LTE packages on your website.

For those that want a low cost backup we now offer a 5GB + 5GB MTN Fixed LTE package at R49 per month. :)
Does it have open ports? Does it have a public IP? Or even if it has a public dynamic IP, I can use ddns

But if you don't it will probably have Double Natting as well

@AfriNatic with this package, is it possible to upgrade and downgrade whenever we like?

eg) Can we for a certain month (eg, December) upgrade to the uncapped package, then downgrade back to the 5+5 in January again?

Found this for you. I guess you would have to do it for the next month as long as you upgrade or downgrade before the 15th.

Yes you can as long as you submit the upgrades and downgrades on time in ClientZone or the App.

Correct me if I am wrong, but think it has to be done before the 15th of each month?

Got my uncapped SIM delivered over an hour ago. Red light on router and it won’t connect. Afrihost support says MTN haven’t activated the SIM on the network yet, but everything is fine on the Afrihost side. He logged a ticket for MTN to “fix” the SIM. Anybody have this experience? If so how long did it take to resolve?

Please remove the simcard and place it in a phone or force the router to 2G or 3G only mode. Let it get signal for a minute or 2 and then change it to LTE/4G only.

Make sure the apn is set to ws.afrihost.fwa

On the Afrihost Pure LTE using a Huawei B525 router what will be the bands to be used in aggregation or is it best to leave everything on auto so that the router choose by itself?

Auto should work the best but there is a few combo's you can try.

B1+B3 is the most popular.
B1 + B8
B3 + B8
B41

B41 is part of the temporary spectrum and even if you can't aggregate on Band 41 since MTN has 2 x temporary spectrum blocks rolled out currently it should still give you around 60-100Mbps due to it being a band that is not supported by a lot of devices especially ones on the approved list.

Hi,

Unfortunately that router although is supports the MTN network bands is not a supported device on Fixed LTE packages.
Why are there devices that aren't supported? None of the devices on that list is outdoor capable. The signal inside the house is so poor an outdoor unit is needed. Only one Mikrotik is supported. Is this due to the carrier aggregation? Also since I have a mikrotik wapR that supports all the bands. I can do a Mac clone on the LTE interface and make it act like a supported Huawei. So my question is why are only those devices supported? Noone seems to be able to tell me.

Also why isn't the mikrotik chateau 5G supported? It's even more capable than the 12

Makes their support issues less?

MTN has has the device limit to prevent old LTE equipment from saturating certain bands while leaving others Idle.

If you look at the B315 for example. It can only use 1 band at a time and it prefers 1800MHz on Auto. Having 40 of these routers on a tower will slow that band down significantly. MTN decided to allow only certain devices which is cat6 or higher which at least supports B1+B3 aggregation. This spreads the load a bit.

I don't have the details why not all routers cat6 and higher aren't allowed, but I would think it's related to the sheer amount of devices out there and difficult to manage.

These are the oudoor units.

I am willing to put money on a bet that they won't have a clue how to support the Mikrotik. Even Afrihost doesn't even know what LTE bands MTN uses. Nor where the towers are, which bands a tower closest to you supports. So I am finding this hard to believe. The argument for congestion I am willing to accept. But that becomes a whole different ball game when outdoor antennas are involved.
