Hey everyone

Are you also experiencing MySQL errors on Afrihost?

Since this morning my scripts could not connect to the MySQL server and now I get 500 (Internal Server) errors all over the show.

Wonder what is going on over there....

Edit: In fact, I now get Internal Server errors on all pages, whether MySQL is being used or not. Seems the whole server is down.

Well, in any ways, looks like I will have to move my client abroad now. They probably have no other choices in this regard....

DigitalOcean. Spool up your own VPS, install packages, Done.

There was a major event in the CT MTN datacenter around 6pm last night which destroyed hard drives in cabinets all over that DC.
Given Afrihosts tight relationship with MTN and the symptoms you are describing and the timeline, I would hazard a guess that your symptoms are related to that event.

Personally I have lost around 20 x WD RE drives across multiple servers just from that event and there were some very unhappy looking people in that DC last night ...

Just another reason not to use these people. Best load your stuff into AWS and replicate it over a few regions. No idea why people use Afrihost for this stuff, AWS is not exactly expensive and if its a big corporate or something the cost is justified.

Yep, you are right. Lessons learnt. SA hosting providers just don't cut it. Busy moving abroad now to a dedicated server. My client did not want to bite, but when they went offline again today they gave the go-ahead.

I wouldn't ditch all SA hosting providers based on Afrihost... They have had plenty of complaints for a long time and i guess that comes with the growth and the whole MTN thing.

There are others out there that do not have these issues and i'm just saying but its pretty unfair to say SA hosting providers just don't cut it, some do, maybe not Afrihost but some other ones do... I'm happy with my host and have not had any issues like this at all and if and when i do have odd issues (relate to my own lack of knowledge about things) they have been willing to try and help.

There are situations where cheap overseas hosting is awesome... Then there are situations where it is just not suitable, at all... For that you need to be in SA and i'm just saying, i'd maybe look around a bit before running away from SA hosts entirely.

Anyways, I think that it's wise to start moving out of that mess as if anything it will get worse before it gets better (they hope at least) and i really doubt that they truly care about your complaints or the fact that you could literally lose income and business over this.

SA hosting is just a dream, also moved back overseas. Uptime=time since last reboot.

Uhh... Yah, so is mine and it's mainly in SA, big whoop...

What you fail to realize is that the more people like you there are, the worse off our technology and web experience gets. Ever tried actually building a relationship with your host? So that they understand and cater for your needs?

There's a place for everything and it's only my opinion but if the majority of your traffic is in SA, why make their experience worse because of your own lack of knowledge or understanding in relation to who and what works best... Take the time to explore all options and alternatives then come back and say okay SA hosting is a dream...

Ever seen the inside of VOX? Because if you think hosting in SA is a dream, it's you that is doing just that...

Bottom line, if you are paying for a cheap service (In SA) then that is exactly what you'll get...

And just FYI, AWS was born in Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA...
