Can users please indicate if their Afrihost Internet is also down.
For 2 days now I am getting this error and cannot even send mail
An error occurred while sending mail: Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.afrihost.co.za is unknown

Hi ekkekan

We did see international issues on our DSL network earlier this morning, but the issues you're describing here are very different.
Not seeing anything widespread around mail.

Have you been able to run any troubleshooting with our team?

All seems fine now. Normally by the time I get a response on my support ticket (24 hours later) the problem would be resolved from the Afrihost side.

This morning was just like yesterday where the smtp.afrihost.co.za server is not know. After 11h00 yesterday all was fine.

Regards.

I had this too on an iPhone with Axxess. I had to reset the mail settings.

Glad to hear things are sorted.
Do you have the ref# I can follow up on to see where the delays came in?

I did not report it yesterday so no point in supplying ref no's - last one was [#NGL-872-32171] On KJN-384-24788 I never got any response only automated e-mail that the support ticket was received.
Over the 7 months I have been asked endless times to change servers when the problem was the Afrihost network.

There certainly haven't been general mail issues over the last 7 months.
Are you able to send/ receive mail via the Webmail interface?

If I check your tickets, we replied to your initial query quite quickly but didn't receive further feedback from you.
The ticket that was with our Critical Care team, I see we tried to follow up and make contact on two occasions that went unanswered :( Perhaps reply to the ticket with our Critical Care team saying that the issue is still present - they have all the info on hand already and will be able to assist.

Intermittend problem over a long period. Pointless wanting a reply via the clientzone if you don't have internet.

The bottom line is that your service is getting pretty bad with constant interruptions. I already had 5 periods this morning that I had no internet and have look at my router internet light before I can even post a reply on the forum.

No wonder the mybroadband survey shows how Afrihost has dropped from no 1 spot to no 8 - 3rd from last amongst the ISP's

You are right that the support was with critical care - constantly trying to change settings which is not the problem.

I'm sorry to hear that we've let you down so much, however I still stand by my previous post.
If there are ongoing issues, our Critical Care team are the guys to talk to. I've asked them to get in touch with you.

Anyone else experiencing connection problems right now? The support line is no help - IVR with a message to try again later.

This is the kinda support one gets from Afrihost.
Ticket: HTG-191-23779
Please change your outgoing server port from 25 to 587 or vice versa.
Restart your outlook as well as your internet connection too.

Have a great day and please let me know if I can help with anything else!

Warm regards

I have been getting this reply to problems since Feb 2015. The same problem. Changing the port does not help. The problem resolves itself after some time without doing anything on my side.
The real problem is that I am stuck without being able to send e-mail at times for 20 min or a few hours. I must still pay my full subscription every month. :(

Have you tried to ping/tracert the outlook server? Could be a problem with the server as well.

Nevermind, it's Telkom exchange issue.

Definitely no issues from our end at the time of posting.
Did we have a fault logged for you?

Just a quick one - it's better to post over in our official threads, those are monitored much more and generally sees a quicker response time from us. Search doesn't always pick up the smaller threads.

I believe our Critical Care team has been in touch with you around the mail issues - no problems coming in from our end.
Please continue to troubleshoot with them.

If you're still stuck, a good place to start is trying to send/ receive mail via Webmail.

Tracert would not reach any of the mail servers that I have tried. There must be some reason why it cannot.

Im confused as to why they are asking you to changed the SMTP port from unauthenticated on 25 to authenticated on 587.

best thing to do though is if the smtp address is down, use like the saix one.

Would you mind giving the IP in a PM? I'll try pinging it from Uni.

In trying to get this resolved I even got this information from Afrihost which is also useless as I never have this problem when using another ISP.

Other possible causes of Lost-Carrier include:

1. A fax or older model T200 touch phone. Both of these devices draw voltage from the phone line and may cause a modem to disconnect.
This is usually identified by regular disconnections every 10-20mins.

2. A home security system may poll the telephone line for security purposes at given intervals

3. Fluorescent lights, mobile phones, cordless phones and base stations all emit electromagnetic fields which may drop a connection.

4. Certain telephone switchboards may also interfere with modem signal.

To isolate the problem, please check on your side first.

Check your cables to see if they are intertwined, disconnect all the above listed, disable call waiting on your voice phone if you have one,
Check the wall jack or filter if it is loose or solid, possibly borrow new cords to checked as well.
