Afrihost Network DOWN????

Im confused as to why they are asking you to changed the SMTP port from unauthenticated on 25 to authenticated on 587.

best thing to do though is if the smtp address is down, use like the saix one.

Thanks. I will try the SAIX server next time if I have the same problem.

Once again in cannot send mail. When I ping smtp.afrihost.co.za I get no reply from host. If I ping any other ISP smtp server I get a below 70ms response.

I have tried SAIX but it is not allowed if connected via MTN network.

I believe our Critical Care team has been in touch with you around the mail issues - no problems coming in from our end.
Please continue to troubleshoot with them.

If you're still stuck, a good place to start is trying to send/ receive mail via Webmail.

I still have the same ongoing problem. smtp.afrihost.co.za is not replying yet all other smtp servers reply if I ping.

THIS is not a TELKOM issue as Anita from support passed the buck when I logged a support ticket.

Wait till you are trying to reach Microsoft to do a Windows 10 upgrade...frustrating - what's up Afrihost?!

They aren't called EMPTY-N for nothing.

Are you guys also experiencing that the internet is fine during most of the day, but then during the course of the night it gets really really slow?! I complained to Afrihost and was quickly asked to test my line and make sure everything was properly connected. I have found that it comes right usually if I restart my router, or change to a different ADSL account. I briefly got my hopes up when I logged on with my extra Axxess account and it was rocking - at this particular time even restarting the router when connected to Afrihost wasn't helping. But then it got slow again. I am talking really poor pings and next to no transfer speeds, sometimes it would fail to complete the speed test. Now I don't know if it is a Telkom fault, possible, or an Afrihost/Axxess fault, but I am getting more and more fedup generally. I have logged a fault with Telkom, never heard back from them, the line or connection has been sort of behaving for the past few days, but just now it was very much grinding to a halt! Logged onto my Axxess test account again and all was well, than back into my Afrihost Afrigreen account and back to normal. My monthly payments are most certainly not intermittent and only "sometimes", so why should my internet be? I am going to see what Telkom has to say, and then I think I am going to try a few free 1GB accounts from some of the other ISP's that offer this, and if it seems that the problem lies with Afrihost/Axxess, then I am outta there - they will lose my business and I will "unrefer" (if that is a word) them from all my friends and family. Also annoyingly, the ping is definitely worse on the Afrihost side compared to Axxess!

If there is a problem on your network, be honest about it, fix it, and don't pass the blame onto Telkom if it is not to blame. I would not put it past Telkom to be the culprit, but so help me, I am tired of substandard performance!

Not seeing any latency like this from monitoring.
Have you tested an Afrigreen, or backup ISP, to see if the results are replicated there?

Hi Philip

From what you're describing here, it sounds like your area suffering from exchange congestion/ degradation.
Do you have a few traceroutes that you can post here? Interested to see where the latency is coming in.

This box doesn't accept ICMP, SMTP is up though :)
You can telnet into the server.

I just had a guy from Telkom out here, no problems with my line. I am now going to give Afrihost ONE more chance to own up and sort this out, ONE more chance. Either they admit there is a problem with their service and sort it out, or they lose my business forever. I do have a Telkom test account and I am also going to sign up for a few free 1GB accounts to test, but I am not going to accept anymore "passing the buck" nonsense from Afrihost/Axxess. Done! And no more tests, I have already sent tests through to your support team.

Not sure if you saw my last post to you?
Definitely no general issues from our end - are you able to run a few tests and paste the results up here? I'd like to work through them with you to see the cause.

If you aren't happy posting them here, can you confirm the ticket ref# so I can chase things up from there?

I have been in contact with Gareth from your support team, will run some tests later this evening.

Thanks.
