Afrihost New Network Feedback

I do have another router, which I could test with later.

I'm not sure what the reason for the attenuation SNR contrast is. I noticed that when my area got its own exchange earlier this year (one of the new VDSL ones). The exchange is 300 meters away from my house.

Try testing it with the other router and see if the line stats change. Do you have any noise on your line when making a call?
At 300m your SNR should be way higher, you should be able to sync at 40Mbps easy.

Are you forcing GDMT in the router or is it set to auto?

Thanks Rickster. It is currently set to auto sync. Do you think it worth experimenting with ADSL2, ADSL2+, G.lite G.dmt or Ti143. Not sure what to expect if I change these.

Sync stats are generally OK'ish I think:

Perfect call quality since Telkom installed a new filter for the phone. Could they have decreased the SNR purposely for some reason?

Afrihost network down?

I can't connect. Internet light on router is red.

Logged in with my web africa account which is working fine.

All looking pretty normal on our monitoring graphs. Can you reboot and try to log in again? If there is still a problem, please OM so I can see what error might be coming up :(

No, a good filter will not affect your SNR much (actually you should see no adverse affects from a filter due to the phone using a different frequency than DSL).
Is your alarm system connected to your phone line?

Leave it at ADSL_2plus or auto. your line stats are all right, I am assuming you suffer drops once a day? This would be due to Telkom trying to keep your SNR above 6dB.

Can't connect to Afrihost. Rebooting router does nothing. Currently using Web Africa 1GB account.

After reconnect full line Speed

Just remember that we don't reset your profile when you reset. If you were hitting shaping that would not change.

We'll have to test further with you to see what is changing in your tests, as per my PM suggestion.

It can cause some problems if it doesn't match the modulation on Telkom's side. Maybe PM me so I can check what your line is set to (if we manage your line).

Your stats looks OK, though 6.8 is not good SNR - if it fluctuates below 6dB, it could mean problems :(

Hopefully can get this sorted. I'm in South of JHB. Don't want to miss the Rugby.

I acknowledge that congestion is a big issue in parts of the country. My line is with Afrihost so I guess it is another plea for help to the AH callcentre next week. I know the drill , answer the question why the modem has been disconnecting so often (yes its me resetting it not random hardware failure), fiddle the plugs in the sockets, bypass the filter, change the filter, check my phone line for sounds of noise or crackle (the audio is crystal clear) switch off the modem, wait a few minutes and try again .... and so on. I have purchased a new router in desperation. I just hope that AH have suggested to Telkom to get this exchange on their to-do list soon because this has been the situation for months if not the whole year... To say that I am frustrated at times is an understatement.

/end rant.

We don't really have the power to force congestion related upgrades, as far as Telkom is concerned our mandate ends at the line, they manage the exchange for their clients and ISP managed lines. We know that they do get regular reports from the exchanges. Let's hope that moving to fibre and also the change to OpenServe will speed this process up :(

PM'd you. I'm in PE, so the south.

Just getting confirmation from the network team, we're just checking. Network is definitely up in general but I'm seeing a few reports on other channels that people can't connect - so it may be linked to authentication.

Anyone else online, please don't disconnect or reboot your routers just in case.

Hi Afriguys, none of you really bothered to reply to me here (or I missed it). I really need to know what I need to do to give the gaming traffic priority, shouldn't it have priority already? Doesn't make sense that other things (p2p, http, streaming) seem to interrupt gaming traffic when they are started and this never used to be the case.

I set my router to give my IP priority for all traffic and I still get packet loss and latency if someone else uses the line.

Sorry, I guess we may have missed this in the shift change handover.

Could you please drop me a mail with all your account details (and contact numbers) and let get one of our people to contact you directly and see what might work for you :)

Network hasn’t disconnected. Checked access logs in ClientZone.
