My speedtests are fine, local sites are fast, but international is broken. Come on Afrihost, everyday now international becomes slow and intermittent. What is going on?

Hi guys

Just dropping in to say thanks for reporting the issues - replicated on my end too.
For those having issues with international sites, please run the following:

ping whoami.akamai.com
ping store.steampowered.com
traceroute store.steampowered.com
mtr --report store.steampowered.com
PM me any wireshark captures

Compiling a report for our network team :)

EDIT: Please also include your location and account type.

Thanks :)
The more tests the better!

As a start, a traceroute/ MTR and a few pings to affected sites are always helpful. If it's Akamai related, you can ping whoami.akamai.com.
For other stranger issues, wireshark is where it's at :)

So I have been trying to do a Tracert the whole evening as the issue is back again like clockwork. And I like to think I am fairly clued up with what I am doing and the Tracert its not hopping very far... anywho I have PMd you the complete Tracert and the ODD ones.

But like clockwork at 8pm it slowed to a crawl for certain services.

Alternating IPs seems to have fixed international sites for me, so a bit hard to pin-point off the bat.
Try rebooting or switching around DNS servers and try things again.

Either way, I've recorded a bunch of tests, replicating what most of you guys are seeing here, including a huge wireshark dump. I'll neaten it up a bit and send through to our network guys in the morning.
Please let me know if/ at what times international sites start working themselves though.

Chat tomorrow :)

Last night and tonight an issue, local sites work fine, international sites ping fine but very sluggish web page loads.
Cant even VPN to work, have to use 3G.

This is really bad, it's like someone flipped a switch. Please get this sorted out. If this happens a third night in a row I'm really going to lose it.

Hi guys

Not sure if you saw my previous posts around this?

League of Legends EUW at 297-408ms, usually ~180ms.
You have the rest of your own tests.

Anyone else having issues with Steam client not downloading Games or Updates at all?

Store on Steam Client also slow to open.

Tried changing download server, but no luck.

Edit: At 22h30 steam started downloading, but these are the speeds I am getting on a 10 meg line with capped package.

Snap 2016-05-12 at 22.41.03.jpg

Another Edit: Automatic DNS assigned were Primary and Secondary:

169.1.1.4
154.0.174.82

Changed DNS to 169.1.1.1 and 169.1.1.2 and things seem better now,but will run more tests tomorrow as it is past 23h00 now and did manage to get max line speed.

Snap 2016-05-12 at 23.03.34.jpg

Will continue to monitor tomorrow as I had this issue for two days and want to make sure that the DNS could have been the issue.

My DNS is manually set to Google's,not dns issue

AfriGuy did mention that he experienced the same problem and has made a full report and will give it to the network team so it has been acknowledged and will be sorted lol.

Anyway, brownnosing over. I am happy and sad at the same time that he has had the same problem and will report it but kudos for telling us all that you had the same issue.

AfriGuy, you also asked what time it cleared up. For me the net returned to normal at around 23:30. It literally just want back to normal, as if nothing was wrong.

I have noted in a number of Traceroutes that the hop from Johannesburg to Cape Town seems to spike drastically.

Morning guys

Thanks to everyone who posted up results last night, adding this through to my report.
Can't seem to draw any conclusive info from it, don't think it's DNS related as I switched to the DNS were I could replicate the issue and it worked.

Could be a number of things.
Anyway, there's enough info here - I'll report back a bit later once we've dug through everyones details :)
