Hi,

So im looking at getting an ADSL line installed. Looking at the 2Mbps Business account from Afrihost. Have already spoken to AfriMan, but would like to get the publics opinions aswell.

My brother will also be getting ADSL, he will be using the Telkom 2Mbps home option.

1.) Are you able to install 2 ADSL lines at one premise ( he apparently spoke to Telkom about this, and they said each of us would need to pay R500 respectively for each of our lines to be installed).

2.) Which of the above accounts are better? I will be doing online gaming (moderate) with my PC and Xbox. He plans to do the same on his account with Telkom.

3.) My usage will be around 150 Gigs a month due to the fact that im studying from home and thus watch alot of lectures online, aswell as get all my course work online. Will the 2Mbps be fine for this (Im paying for the line out of my own pocket and so cannot afford 4Mbps). When the internet contract with MTN ends, other family will probably move onto my account and then we will move to 4Mbps.

4.) The Telkom phone line for R157 p/m, do you have to sign a contract for that, or is the line on a month to month basis.

5.) Anyone in the Lynnwood Glen area in Pretoria have adsl? What exchange do we connect to (I live near Varsity College).

6.) Which of the 2 ISP's are better to go with?

* I know alot of you might be thinking that we should just have one line and split the cost for a higher package eg 4Mbps, unfortunately, we have looked it over and decided its better to have 2 seperate lines :)

Another quick question, I heard about Telkom having a soft cap, does someone at what data usage you will reach that? Does Afrihost have a soft cap?

I would go with Afrihost as it is an unshaped and unthrottled account. Pings on AH is much better in my experience.
When Telkom is on the ball, the account is solid, but latency for me has a difference of about 50 - 60ms in favour of AH.

Hi SeanJ

I would recommend that you get your ADSL line from Axxess. For a 4Mbps ADSL line rental they charge R249.00 per month and zero contracts ;)

I heard Axxess shapes your account terribly, which i cant have as i need to be able to work during the mornings from 8 to 11, any truth to the shaping?

This is why i chose Afrihost :)

Exactly why i chose Afrihost :)

RoMark, I take it that you mean Afrihost Business Uncapped accounts ;)

I do agree, business accounts are the bomb!!

You have 2 options:
4Mbps Axxess Business Uncapped account = R596.00
https://www.axxess.co.za/businessuncapped

or

4Mbps Afrihost Business Uncapped account = R697.00
http://www.afrihost.com/site/product/business_adsl?src=website_nav

Both companies business uncapped accounts are 100% unshaped which is a good thing!
But I would go with Axxess as it's the same account as Afrihost but cheaper.

You can also look at the Axxess Combo packages if you want to save more bucks :)

Hope that helps.

Another quick question, I heard about Telkom having a soft cap, does someone at what data usage you will reach that? Does Afrihost have a soft cap?
Soft cap is for capped accounts like 20 GB account, etc.

Telkom throttle you to about a quarter of your line speed once you have reached your limit.
Before the line upgrades it was about:
130GB for 1Mbps
260GB on 2Mbps
400GB 4Mbps
1GB for 10Mbps

However, you can stretch those figures much more if you schedule httpn nttp and torrents between 00:00 and 06:00. Same goes for weekends.

Not sure if has changed since the upgrades.

Telkom can implement shaping as well, although I don't think I ran into any shaping before January this year. Since late December my account was farked till February.

I then moved to AH Home uncapped.
Reports seem to indicate that Telkom is getting better for some since the weekend.

AH does not have a cap.
On the Home uncapped there are no throttling, semi shaped.
This mean all all real tine services like browsing, email, streaming and gaming are never shaped.
Shaping can be implemented on http downloads and P2P.

Im in the Southern region and route through Cape Town and have seen some shaping, but Not a lot.

Gauteng received an IPC upgrade and does seem that they have any shaping.

Shaping are implemented when their network is under pressure and then they start implementing on heaviest users first and goes down the list till presure is reliefed. Shaping is lifted when the network pressure normalises.

You are not penalised for the amount you download and no throttling on any AH account.

I was on Afrihost normal uncapped, move to business uncapped then to Telkom uncapped.

I'm now considering a different ISP. You get what you pay for is all I can say.

Always good to get a public opinion, so won't throw in my 2c - unless you need any clarification on anything said :)

Hope we come out on top :)

I needed to go away from Telkom because I could not play online games with the 4mb package. I switched to MWEB, but I don't think they are a good alternative to your needs, as I am sure a lot of people here will agree with. In my case, MWEB as the best option, but I think the AfriHost option will work better for you.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone :) I came across a thread on MyBB about Webafrica, quick question, how is their 4Mbps ADSL + Line cheaper than Afrihost?

Webafrica charge R699.00 for a 4Mbps business uncapped account. How is that cheaper than Afrihost or Axxess

Sorry, in my post i didnt mention the 4Mbps would be a home account, that was my bad. The only business account would be the 2Mbps :-) The 4Mbps home account from webafrica is cheaper than Afrihost :-)

Afrihost is better than Telkom.

Have you had a look at the Axxess Business accounts though? R100 cheaper than Afrihost.

I did have a look, but im a bit reluctant after the threads ive read on this forum. Do you perhaps have experience with Axxess business accounts?

Yes, have tried most ISP accounts over the past few years. By far the best has been the Business Uncapped account from Axxess. Works like a dream, 24/7 ;)
