Afrihost POC Network - Afrigreen Feedback

Hey guys

The network guys have given us an update on the Afrigreen POC.

The feedback and participation of everyone here is vital to everything that has got us this far, and both the network team and all the reps are supremely grateful for everyone’s contribution.

We’ve now come to the end of the POC phase and are preparing to move into production. We have already started implementing the infrastructure required to have points of presence (IPC) in 3 regions (North, South & East).

We believe that LAB simulations aren’t always a true reflection of how we use the internet so part of the POC required that we simulate a constrained network.
Due to physical limitations on the physical Network Core Equipment we cannot upgrade the POC IPC capacity but we’re very excited that the new Network Core Equipment is being deployed and will soon be ready for use.

We’ll keep Afrigreen running and we’ll migrate it to the new production network over the next few weeks (in October). We’ll be sending out official communications early next week (from Gian, our CEO) with more accurate dates.
Till then, our team will continue running tests on Afrigreen with intentions of making the migrations as smooth as possible.
You can still use your afrihost.co.za ADSL username on the MTN network and we’ll let you know once we’ve migrated Afrigreen to the new network.

We’re very grateful to have had the opportunity to drive demand on the POC as high as possible to simulate conditions in the real world, like if we experience a major loss of IPC capacity. This has been extremely valuable to the team to be able to test scenarios and network policies that will ensure that we provide the best experience we can under difficult conditions.

Again, we’d like to thank everyone for testing, providing feedback and just being part of this awesome new phase of Afrihost’s development as a service provider. We’re honoured that so many have been so diligent in their feedback both here and via ClientZone, you’ve made a huge contribution to the new network!

Ok, so testing has completed, but your network is not coping and this is now going to be come your main network. No news on why things are slow or not working as they should?

I think things have been explained in the post above. The POC network has reached it's limit due to a physical limitation. Going forward, we're implementing core equipment to increase this.

So all of a sudden the so called POC will come to an end. We will find out soon enough what exactly this means.
Like they say - "If you cannot stand the heat get out of the kitchen"

As for the super sensitivity of some of the Afrihost representatives - Get over yourselves. You get paid a salary. The people on this forum thread are your unhappy customers. Granted some people can be a little abrasive but their anger is justified. You take their money and you do not deliver the goods. All we get is excuses!
A while ago there was a huge article in Entrepreneur Magazine about how Afrihost built a multi million rand empire. Now that the chickens are coming home to roost you do not want the publicity. Man up and live up to the expectations you have created. One way to sort out this mess is to stop selling bandwidth you do not have. This is nothing personal - it is called business.

So when I said the network had reached capacity, I was told I was assuming many things, looks like it was correct in my assumption?

Give this man a Bells please - Ag, make it a single malt instead!

Afrigreen will be moved over as our main network, so we're not trying to get out of anything.

You just admitted that you are out of capacity on Afrigreen. The Legacy network is a shambles. Please explain how this will improve things. Maybe I have missed something here.

The POC was setup as a set limit, so the network was physically limited.
By moving this over as our main network involves core network equipment be pushed live - which removes the physical limit. I've highlighted the important bits :)

Could you give an estimate of when the network will go live (as in out of POC)? By the next week/end of month?

The POC was setup as a set limit, so the network was physically limited.
By moving this over as our main network involves core network equipment be pushed live - which removes the physical limit. I've highlighted the important bits :)

So basically the hope is that with equipment that can handle more capacity things will improve. However, will you not still be limited by the bandwidth capacity you buy and resell?

The core installations are happening now, as for a switch over date - I'm not sure just yet. The info is pretty hot off the press, so should have dates confirmed some time soon :) The aim is to get the migration going within October.

The core equipment will increase capacity. Currently Afrigreen is setup as a POC, so it's only a fraction of our live IPCs capacity. For the migration though, capacity will obviously be increased - as the rest of our DSL clients will be moved over :)

So if Afrigreen has reached its limit. What do we do for now?

Keep using Afrigreen or do we switch back to normal Afrihost Business Account?

You can do either or, which ever works better for you :)
We're working on installing core equipment on the IPC before the migration to enable additional capacity.

Well these days I guess normal Afrihost account is working slightly better than Afrigreen.

When will the migration take place?
