Afrihost R1 July/August Discussion thread (please don't start other threads)

well only advice I can give is, if you plan on doing uncertain amounts of downloading every month, rather go with a good rated uncapped account.

pick Afrihost capped accounts for exactly that, being capped.

I have a 3gig capped account with them and I usually (ab)use their 2-for-1 specials come end of month (well most months).

atm their (25+25) 50gig package is still just a bit out of my range but I usually find myself topping up so much during a month, that it would seem like the better choice.
but then the flexibility comes in where I can choose each month if I actually want to top-up or not.

I am shocked at the service. As a loyal paying customer, they can send a newsletter to inform us about these specials. I dont click on their website everyday to see these specials.

A friend of mine told me this morning that he received an e-mail from AH informing him about the special. Anyone else received such e-mails?

They did this to get new customers, not reward you loyal existing customers. That's a battle for another day.
I want to test my new R1 capped account to compare with WA. I don't do uncapped any more and will then have another ISP to choose capped from (currently only Telkom and WA).

I'm actually quite impressed with the 4meg uncapped I got, speeds during the even have been excellent on http/normal traffic.
Gaming on local servers still sitting in 30 to 40ms range.
I did notice my data that comes through on non std ports is a bit slower than my WA account.

Its a lot better than i expected, have only done about 4 gigs of data on it tho.

Kudos to Gian and Moshe.

They PM'd me an offer of 100Gb for R1, which I politely declined as I was not wanting a freebie, rather only wanting to highlight a matter of principle.

/still a satisfied Afrihost uncapped customer.

Good for you sir... I dont think I would be man enough to decline that kind of offer.

Well done to AH for shaking things up once again.

WOW!!! what kind of letter did you send them or what kind of "hold" do you have over them? :p

would have also liked one of those accounts, but just like you, I feel that the whole "signing up for it and then cancelling once it will be over" just doesn't sit right.

I also understand that the reason why us, the already customers, maybe didn't get notifications is that they wanted to attract new customers but it just comes down to the fact that I hardly ever get a notification from them.

even when I do it is either too late or, a letter that should have been sent at beginning of a month, gets to me at the end of the month or beginning of next.

I used the R1 account to download all the games I bought on the Steam Summer special. All 40GB of them :-) .The downloads were way faster than Telkom.

Sent from my GT-I9100 using MyBroadband Android App

My speeds on Tuesday were fantastic. I was pulling at a nice 8.79mbits. Did about 40gb on Tuesday.

Yesterday it all went to crap. It all slowed down to unusable levels, I was barely able to access mybroadband. A youtube video would download at 18kbps for about 10 seconds then just die. I had to refresh the page, download another 10 seconds, refresh, download => Rinse repeat.

I swapped to my axxess account and my uncapped account with V1 and the speeds there were 100%.

Will see what happens tonight.

Afrihost 5GB account - been downloading couple megabytes a day and always got full speed.

Will continue testing but so far so good. :)

Honeymoon over? Let's see if more users has the problem at least before jumping the gun. It could be congestion on the DSLAM.

Well, afaik, Afrihost throttles each hour depending on their network strain and the uncapped user's download pattern. We've read people's remarks over the product, and let's face it, 40GB in one day is well... a lot:D (that said, I wish I could do that much in a day )

turns out i have to pay full price for my promo account.

contrary to what i agreed to pay ( R1 ) when i signed up.

they say it was already sold out but it wasn't cos i double checked that before i signed up and sent my ID.

so no chance of getting my refund

i'm %$#" furious!!

Welcome to uncapped throttling.

I didn't get an uncapped account. I am using the 100gb account, which afaik isn't subject to throttling due to the finite amount of bandwidth available.

No #|_|($ them. Fight, argue, moan, complain. Threaten that you will complain/write emails to all and sundry. Perhaps the CPA could help you here.

The bottom line: Do not take no for an answer.

I have the same problem. The amount (the last one showed) at the credit card screen was R1. Now after reading your post I noticed my invoice is +-R250 for 20GB. Somewhere between searching for my card and sending, they decided to add extra money.
I will not let this go.
